O'Bryon, Jason
Jackson Progress Argus 29 May 1985
The body of 4-year-old Jason O'Bryon, who drowned in the Ocmulgee River May 18 when the canoe he was riding in with his father capsized, was recovered from the river Saturday about noon.
According to Butts County Sheriff Billy Leverette, the child's body was found under debris on the Butts County side of the river approximately five miles from where the accident occurred. The location is about 1.5 miles north of the Georgia 83 bridge.
Several rescue units and divers from surrounding counties participated in what Leverette described as one of the longest and most intensive searches ever conducted on the Ocmulgee River.
The search was well into its eighth day when Jason s body was discovered by one of the units.
Jasper County Sheriff Mack Tilhnan said the boy's body must have surfaced some time Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Tilhnan added that part of the river had been patrolled constantly every day since the accident occurred. Jason was on a camping and canoeing trip with his father, Marcus O'Bryon of Turtle Cove, when their canoe struck a log and overturned about 50 feet from the bank. Jason's father had just pushed off from the bank where Wise Creek flows into the Ocmulgee River when the rapid current caused their canoe to hit a log and to overturn.
No life preserver was found on Jason's body when he was recovered from the river and some witnesses said they did not believe he had one on.

Macon Youth Drowns Sunday At High Falls
A Macon youth, 17-year-old Benjamin Murray Oden of 2072 Bayswater Road, drowned Sunday afternoon in the identical pool and place in the river below High Falls dam in which an Atlanta youth was drowned last July 4th.
According to Butts County Ranger S. L. (Shorty) Letson, the victim was among a party of seven youths from Macon spending the afternoon at High Falls State Park. Several were swimming in the pool when Oden was caught in a severe whirlpool and sucked under the water and rocks. Mr. Letson said that his body was recovered about 15 minutes later by Steve Hatcher of Macon, a companion on the outing, when the body was washed against his legs at the lower end of the pool.
Resuscitation was attempted for more than 30 minutes before the youth was pronounced dead by a Jackson physician.
According to Ranger Letson, the pool in which the two drowning have occurred was roped off Monday and future swimming will be strictly prohibited because of the dangerous currents.
Another near tragedy at High Falls was narrowly averted Saturday night, according to Ranger Letson, when a boat with three men from Decatur struck the dam in the darkness, demolishing the craft and hurling the three occupants into the water, two of whom swam to the safety of the dam, while the other member, unable to swim, hung onto an outcropping of the dam until rescued by Ranger Letson about 30 minutes later. The men involved in the unusual accident were listed by Mr. Letson as Terrell Turner, Terry Sports, and John Naiger In addition to the destruction of the boat, the fishermen lost most of their tackle and some personal effects. The accident happened about 8:30 Saturday night.

Ogletree, Absalom Hardy, Judge

Judge A. H. Ogletree Falls on Final Sleep
One of Middle Georgia's Leading Citizens Passes after Long Illness; Funeral Held Sunday
In the death of Judge A. H. Ogletree which occurred at his home at Berner shortly after midnight Saturday morning, Butts county lost one of its leading citizens. He had been in failing health for two years or more having been confined to his home recently, but his condition was not thought critical and his passing came as a shock to the family and friends.
Judge Ogletree was born in Monroe county May 14, 1850 and would have celebrated his eightieth birthday in a few days. He came of an old and influential middle Georgia family having been a son of Absolom Ogletree and Martha Stewart Ogletree, pioneer residents of this section. His father was one of the organizers of the Congregational church, organized at the home of Micklebury Merritt in Monroe county in 1852. Moving to Butts county in 1853 Judge Ogletree had spent his long and useful life as a resident of this county, giving to its up building and development his best thought and energies.
He had served his county in many responsible positions, always with fidelity and credit. He served as a member of the general assembly, where he formed enduring friendship that continued throughout the years. He was a former judge of the Flovilla city court, holding that position as long as the court existed. For a long period of years he was chairman of the Butts County Democratic Executive committee, proving a tower of strength in all party councils and defending the party against all isms and reforms. He was a Democrat, standing for party regularity at all times and probably no act of his life ever gave him greater pleasure than to stand by the party of Jefferson and Jackson.
Of all public men Butts county has sent to the state house probably none ever retained their influence so well as Judge Ogletree. He was acquainted with all the prominent public men of his generation, enjoying a confidence and prestige that made him a familiar figure about the capitol. This popularity and influence was freely used by his friends and many are those who owe political preferment to his ability and service.
Judge Ogletree will be remembered for his loyalty to his friends. His was a strong and positive character. He always took sides on every public question but was honest and fair to his opponents. He was steadfast. Those friends who were tried and true he grappled to his heart with hooks of steel.
He was broad in his charities and sympathy and perhaps no citizen of the county ever did more to help his follow man. He gave largely of his time and effort toward helping the unfortunate and there is no record that he ever turned a deaf ear to the man in trouble, regardless of race or creed. He was genuinely loved by his friends. Although a gentleman of the old school, he kept in touch with modern progress.
He was a member of Rock Springs Congregational church, which he joined as a boy, and of Indian Springs lodge of Masons.
Judge Ogletree is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Mary Bell, member of an old and prominent Butts county family; three daughters, Mr. H. Stevens of Columbus; Mrs. J. W. Smith, of Forsyth, and Mrs. J. J. Martin, of Berner; three sons, Miller Ogletree of Berner; Frank Ogletree, of Cork, and George C. Ogletree an assistant internal revenue collector, Atlanta; two brothers, John Ogletree, of Spa1ding county, and R. D. Ogletree of Griffin. He is also survived by several grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. J. F. Davis officiating. The services were attended by hundreds of relatives and friends and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Friends paying lofty tribute to his character were Mr. S. M. Pope, Mr. T. R. Talmadge, Col. J. T. Moore, Mr. W. F. Huddleston.
The active pallbearers were the sons and sons-in-law and honorary pallbearers were W. A. Dozier, W. E. Watkins, Dr. A. F. White, G. E. Mallet, J. C. Jones, S. J. Foster, Joel Mallet, J. T. Moore and J. D. Jones. The services at the grave were in charge of Indian Springs lodge of Masons. The body was laid to rest in Jackson city cemetery.

O'Kelly, Mary Frances
The Jackson Progress-Argus January 27, 1928
Death Has Called To Miss Frances O'Kelly.
The death of Miss Mary Frances O'Kelly in Milledgeville Sunday, morning caused genuine sorrow in Jackson, her childhood home.
Miss O'Kelly was one of the brightest students at the Georgia State College for Women, having graduated with an A. B. degree last June. She was doing post graduate work and also studying violin and piano. She intended to complete her studies at Boston another year.
Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. O'Kelly, left here about eight years ago and the people here remember her as a sweet and lovable little girl with gracious manners. She was unusually gifted in music. She was recently voted the daintiest girl at G.S.C.W.

Late Miss O'Kelley Is Paid Editorial Tribute.
A very significant and splendid editorial tribute was paid the late Miss Mary Frances O'Kelley by Mrs. Frances Brown McCullar, managing editor of the Milledgeville Times, in the last issue of that paper. Miss O'Kelley's death in Milledgeville on Sunday of last week brought grief to many hearts and the signed editorial of Mrs. McCullar is unmistakable evidence of the high esteem in which she was held in Milledgeville, where she was taking post graduate work at the Georgia State College for Women.
The editorial follows:
"I should like to put this tribute to Frances O'Kelley that her beautiful life deserved, but I am not capable. She was my friend, and I know well the beauties of her character. But my vocabulary does not contain the words necessary to pay her the tribute that she deserves. I do not think the entire English language does. I have always been particularly susceptible to the charm of people whose charm emanated from unselfishness, and I have never known an individual more unselfish than she. She had for her motto "in the alphabet of charm there is no such word as "I", it is all "you."
The last time I saw her, she was wending her way daintily through the G.S.C.W. campus, exquisitely, though modestly and quietly dressed. We strolled along together just about the time of afternoon when the setting sun had just dipped beneath the horizon and left the soft grey twilight to cover earth with its mantle. Church spires were silhouetted against the evening sky, and over all the earth that I could see there was a gentle and peaceful beauty.
"Frances had just been to play her violin on a program for one of the organizations here. I just happened to know that she had been invited that afternoon to a jolly party that some young people of her own age were having. I asked her why she did not go. She answered that she had already promised to play for the program. Rare and wonderful being, who unselfishly denied herself a youthful pleasure that she might keep a promise and give others pleasure with the enchanting music that she could charm from her violin.
"And as I looked around at the beauty of the earth surrounding me, and up at the first tiny star that was peeping through heaven's blue, I suddenly saw her, too, as part of God's beautiful plan, and I thought in my heart, She, too. Oh Mighty Master, is part of Thy wondrous plan. Thou hat made the beauty of the earth, the beauty of the setting sun, the beauty of the first night star and they all glorify Thee, and then Thou hast made the beauty of this girl's soul, and she too, is glorifying Thee with her charm and her talent.
"The world is better because Frances O'Kelley has lived in it. Her music leaved behind a trail of melody and memory that will not soon die out of the hearts that knew her. Her life was truly an inspiration, her memory a benediction."

In Memory
One of the saddest deaths of the season was that of Mrs. L. S. O'Neal, which occurred last Wednesday, Dec. 13. Mrs. O'Neal before her marriage was Miss Annie Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Harris. She was born and reared in Butts county, where she lived until death claimed her at the close of 39 short years. Early in life she was married to Mr. Lorien O'Neal. She leaves her husband and four children, Mrs. J. P. Anderson, of Atlanta, Raleigh, Raymond and Effie Gean O'Neal, who made their home with the parents at time of her death. Mrs. O'Neal was always frail in body and for the past few years had been an invalid, on bed a good deal of the time, but never loosing interest in her home and family. She was one of the most ambitious mothers for the welfare of her children I ever knew, always wanted them identified with every good work. Her children have been attendants of Jackson Methodist Sunday School from the primary department to the highest classes in the school. Though limited in strength she gave a part of it to helping in the work of her church, was always responsive when called on for any good cause, especially annual work day in the fall of the year. She was gifted with the needle and like Dorcas of old her memory will be in the hearts of the people of our little city where they look upon the many, many garments she made with her weak, but energetic fingers.
Her friends will miss her, her family will miss her love and counsel, but let us bear in mind "Our loss is heaven's gain." Her pain-racked body suffers no more, and we shall meet again on the resurrection morn.
A FRIEND.

O'Neal, Infant
The Jackson Argus June 23, 1899
In Memoriam.
Charlie Mather O'Neal.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. O'Neal died Friday morning, the 10th inst., after ten days severe illness. Weep not, dear father and mother, for the precious one is at rest and heave was made fairer and sweeter with his immortal bloom.
So-
Let us be patient! These severe afflictions
Not from the ground arise,
But oftentimes celestial benedictions
Assume this dark disguise.
We see but dimly through mists and vapors;
Amid these earthly damps,
That seem to us but sad funeral tapers,
May be heaven's distance lamps.
There is no death! What seems to be so is transition;
This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life Elysian,
Whose portal we call death.
He is not dead, the child of your affection.
But gone unto that school
Where he no longer needs our door protection
And Christ himself doth rule.
In that great cloister's stillness and seclusion
By guardian angles led,
Safe from temptations, safe from sin's pollution,
He lives whom we call dead.
Day after day we think what he is doing
In those bright realms of air,
Year after year his tender steps pursuing,
Behind him grow more fair.
Thus do we walk with him and keep unbroken
The bond which nature given,
Thinking that our remembrance, though unspoken,
May reach him where he lives.
Not as a child shall we again behold him,
For, when with raptures wild,
In our embrace we again enfold him,
He will not be a child;
But a fair angel in his Father's mansion.
Clothed with celestial grace;
And beautiful with all the soul's expression,
Shall we again behold his face.
And though at times impetuous with emotion
And anguish long suppressed,
The swelling heart heaves meanings like the ocean,
That cannot be at rest.
We will be patient, and assuage the feelings,
We may not wholly stay;
By silence sanctifying, not concealing,
The grief that must have way.

At Rest.
Saturday morning, June 14th, the Angel of Death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O'Neal with a whispered message from the Father and little Marie, their only child, with a last fond farewell on her lips of "Mama, I love you," was borne by the angel in tender arms of love, over the dark, wild river of Death to God's glorious home above, where there is no more pain, no sickness, no death.
"There is no death! An angel form
Walks o'er the earth with slight tread!
He bears our best loved things away,
And then we call them dead.
Oh not to cruelty, not in wrath
The Reaper came that day;
Twas an angel visited your home
And took the flower away."
Weep not for her dear mother and father; you will miss her sweet patient face and cheerful voice, but remember the happiness, the place, the boundless love she now enjoys. Think not of that lonely grave.
"Angels bright will watch beside it,
In the quiet holy slumber.
Till the morning, then awake it
To a place among their number."
She was a bright, happy child, and although the five short years of her life were years of sickness, and pain, yet never a groan or complaint escaped her lips. She always greeted with a smile and a welcome, always cheerful, always happy. Little Marie, we shall miss thy happy greeting, we shall miss thy smiles of love, but angel playmates share thy smiles---art with the redeemed above.
"And ever near us though unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread;
For all the boundles universe in life,
There are no dead."
ONE WHO LOVED HER.

Miss Dollie O'Rear Passes Over the Dark River.
Miss Dollie O'Rear died at the residence of Mr. J. H. McCullum about 12 o'clock Monday night, of typhoid fever, after an illness of about two weeks. After a brief funeral service at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. T. H. Timmons, her remains were interred in the Jackson cemetery at 2 o'clock p.m. Tuesday.
The following extract was the last part of Bro. T. H. Timmons eulogy on Miss Florence's death:
"Miss Florence O'Rear was universally admired. One of the beautiful traits of her character was to be pleasant and kind to all. She met everyone with a smile or a kind word. She has gone from you not to return. Her death has cast a gloom over the whole community. Her young life has been cut off as with a sword. The glorious prospect of a sunny life is swallowed up by the gloom of death. The bounding frozen forever with not a furrow on the brow not one line of care on the face she went away from earth. The fair young head rests peacefully on its last pillow. May God sanctify this sad, sorrowful event to our good and to His own glory.

A Horrible Accident, In Which Jim O'Rear Is Killed.
Our whole town and community was shocked on Thursday morning when the news was made public that Jim O'Rear had been killed by the train at Flovilla during the previous night. Mr. O'Rear had been flagging during the previous night on Capt. Gignalliat's gravel train for only about one month when the terrible accident occurred. Previous to that time he had been the chief painter in J. R. Carmichael & Co.'s Carriage Manufacturing and becoming tired of the confinement of the paint shop took the position as flag man as stated above.
At the time he was killed he was passing from one coal car to another, while the train was slowly moving, and missing his footing, fell between the cars and was crushed to death in an instant by the ponderous wheels. His left hand was cut off and his breast terribly mangled. His remains were brought to Jackson and buried in the city cemetery on Friday at 10 o'clock. Rev. T. H. Timmons conducted the funeral rites. He was the son of Mr. John O'Rear of this place and brother to Messrs. Will and Daniel O'Rear of Atlanta. About one year ago he was married to Miss Claudie Falkner of Jasper County. The Argus tenders to all the bereaved ones its sympathies.

Aged Veteran Claimed By The Grim Reaper
The death of J. W. Outhouse took place at the residence of Mrs. Virginia Manley Tuesday night at 8:30 o'clock and followed a few days illness with pneumonia. His death came as a surprise and shock to the people of the city. He was a member of the medical director's staff in that conflict. He loved the warm sunny climate in the South and often spoke in terms of praise of the fine weather here. The Jackson Argus July 19, 1907
Mrs. Outhouse Gone Home.
After many years of delicate health and several weeks of suffering and confinement to her bed, Mrs. J. W. Outhouse went last Friday afternoon to her reward.
No one could come in touch with her without feeling the purity of her life, and her influence for that which was good and true. She was a most consistent member of the Methodist church, a faithful attendant upon its services, a lover of the cottage prayer meetings, a zealous worker for missions, a generous giver, and above all, a deeply spiritual Christian. How rarely we meet one with so many rich gifts.
The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church, Rev. W. R. Branham, her pastor for four years, conducted the last sad rites. In his beautiful talk he stressed three points in her life, "Her Devotion to God's Word, Her Faith in Prayer, and her zeal for Missions."
We meet her type so seldom that we feel her loss more keenly. Her going away is a great to her husband and children, her church, her community, but to her it is a great gain.

Griffin Man Is Killed Saturday As Car Overturns
Richard W. Ozburn, 25, of 114 W. Poplar St., Griffin, was instantly killed Saturday afternoon at about 2:15 o'clock when the car in which he was riding alone overturned a mile west of Jackson on Route 16, the Griffin-Jackson Road. The car was proceeding in the direction of Jackson when the mishap occurred.
Ozburn was thrown clear of the car and suffered compound fractures of the skull which caused immediate death, according to a Jackson physician. The car was demolished and according to Butts County Sheriff J. D. Pope the auto probably rolled over as many as three times. It is believed that Ozburn ran off the shoulder on the right and in an attempt to pull the car onto the road, lost control and overturned.
