Saint George and Saint Michaels Epsicopal Church

Provided by N. Reddick

In Burke County, in the 1770s, an Episcopal Church was established out hwy 24 near Alexander between Waynesboro and Sardis. The church established by King George was the Anglican parish in this area. Burke County was all St George's Parish before the Revolution. It is believed that the church burned  during the revolution and all that remains is the cemetery.  After the Revolutionary War, it most likely it became the site of a Methodist Church.

For 100 years Burke County was without an Anglican/Episcopal Church. St. Michaels was established in the late 1800's. In the 1960s, St Michael's renovated the nave and sanctuary and a stone from the original St George's Parish was inserted in the brick behind the altar. You can see this stone from Liberty Street (it's behind the HVAC units).
