Townsend House Cemetery

Spring Lake Area

Townsend House Cemetery reads like a Who's Who of Hernando and Pasco County Pioneers. Settled by Capt. John and Nancy Townsend, formerly of Madison County in the early 1840's it is one of the oldest white settlements in "Old Hernando County". The Townsend family home, a log cabin, was a community gathering point where the residents sought safety and defended against the local Indian population.

After the Civil War, or as it is referred to locally, the War of Northern Aggression, the Townsend family removed to a new larger home. At that time the community residents built a new community house which was put to immediate use as a Methodist Church and the Townsend House School. In 1880 or there abouts yet another building was erected the property for which was donated by another pioneer resident, Joshua "Bones" Mizell, a rather colorful character immortalized by Frederick Remington in his story 'The Last Cracker Cowboy'. That building stood until 2001 when it was condemned and demolished.

From Brooksville take SR 50 east to Spring Lake Highway (CR41) immediately after crossing the Hernando-Pasco County Line, turn right on Dan Brown Road. From there proceed to Townsend House Rd and turn right, follow Townsend House Rd to the cemetery.

From Dade City, take Blanton Rd (CR41) to about 3/4mile past I-75and turn left on Dan Brown Road, then right on Townsend House Road.
