Osceola County was created on May 12, 1887 from Orange and Brevard Counties and became Florida's 40th county. It was named after the famous Seminole leader, and extended all the way down to Lake Okeechobee until 1917. In the late nineteeth century it was a transportation hub for riverboats and the railroad with an economy based on the Florida cattle frontier, sugar and lumber. Today the county comprises of 1,506 square miles with two cities, Kissimmee, incorporated in 1883 and St. Cloud, incorporated in 1911. Kissimmee is the county seat. Other rural communities include Campbell City, Deer Run, Holopaw, and Narcoosee to name a few.
