for MGS Member Contributions

 Cracker Crumbs

CRACKER CRUMBS is the Manasota Genealogical Society's (MGS) newsletter. We are a non-profit entity, and will be distributing the newsletter via e-mail to members in the Adobe Acrobat PDF format, and also, for the time being, the newsletter can be found on the MGS website at: sites.rootsweb.com/~flmgs .  The size of the newsletter is being limited to make the electronic file size reasonable (about 300 to 500KB), so that will download quickly.

Suggested Subject Matter  (with a genealogical focus)

Upcoming events of local interest, a summary of an event or trip, a helpful hint or new source, "how to" information, a helpful website, research ideas, successful strategies for locating records of ancestors,

How to Submit Your Contribution

  1. The text of your contribution can be material written to, or copy/pasted to a blank email, or you can send an attached file in MS Word 97, 2000 or 2003 format.  The general formatting should use upper & lower case (NO ALL CAPS), single space, left justify, no indents (tabs or extra spacing), one blank line between paragraphs,  indicate a web address or email address with the prefix "<" and the suffix ">", and the standard 1 space following the punctuation at the end of a sentence. These actions help the Editor in assembling the final product.
  2. At the top of your first page, please be sure to include: title, subtitle (if appropriate), author (you), and author's  (your) e-mail address.
  3. If photos or scanned documents are submitted, the formats that are acceptable include:  xxxxx .gif or xxxxx.jpg ; please include the source of the photo, copyright info, and indicate that you have permission to use the item in question, if necessary. Note: Documents from public records such as pension, passenger, census, vital records etc. are considered OK if only one or two items are used from the same file.
  4. Sources and References: Please give credit, where credit is due. Be sure to include author, title, publication info, and page numbers. If citing an internet resource, provide complete web address and the date viewed. Respect living individuals. Follow generally accepted guidelines by the National Genealogical Society - NGS .
  5. Submit your Article via email to the MGS Newsletter Editor  with the subject heading "MGS Cracker Crumbs". It is very important that the subject heading be as specified to avoid getting "lost" in SPAM filters.

 Member Articles

MGS Members are encouraged to publish Articles on our MGS Website. Web Publishing can get your special or new information into the world wide genealogical community. Today's web based search engines can quickly lead researchers to your material.  Consider contributing a short article to share with your fellow MGS members and the genealogical community The maximum length of an article is recommended at  3 pages, unless you've contacted the editor prior to submission. Normally, articles are about 1-2 pages; also, with this publishing strategy we don't have to worry much about the length of an Article because it does not impact the Newsletter size limit.

Suggested Subject Matter (with a genealogical focus)

A "Member Spotlight" type Article where a member presents some results of his/her research, and includes some interesting information related to the member/researcher, or a "brickwall" solution with details, or new information on your ancestors and their relationships, migrations, burials, etc., or interesting and enlightening facts extracted from tax, court, deed or probate records. Use your imagination on subject matter!

How to Submit Your Contribution

  1. Your Article should be "ready" for publication. Use MS Word, or other common word processor format, with digital images (if any) imbedded in the file (i.e. pictures placed in appropriate locations within the text body).  Your Article will be converted to an Adobe Arobat PDF file for publishing on the MGS website.
  2. At the top of your first page, please be sure to include: title, subtitle (if appropriate), author (you), and author's  (your) e-mail address.
  3. Sources and References: Please give credit, where credit is due. Be sure to include author, title, publication info, and page numbers. If citing an internet resource, provide complete web address and the date viewed. Respect living individuals. Follow generally accepted guidelines by  the National Genealogical Society - NGS.
  4. Submit your Article via email to the MGS WebMaster:  Jim McHugh  [email protected] , with the subject heading "MGS Member Article" . It is very important that the subject heading be as specified to avoid getting "lost" in SPAM filters.

THANK YOU!  Our membership and the genealogical community will all appreciate your efforts in preparing a contribution to Cracker Crumbs, and/or an Article for publishing on our MGS Website. You will enjoy this effort, as well as the result!  The success of these publications depends on YOU!
