MCGS Moore's Cemetery

MCGS Cemetery Project
Moore's Cemetery
Stuart, FL

This pine-covered, old cemetery, located on Seville Street near the busy intersection of Monterey Bouleavard and SR76 in Stuart, was formerly known as The Community Cemetery according to Janet Hutchinson's The History of Martin County.

Now it is used infrequently and is under the supervision of Richard McHardy, who, with his uncle, George McHardy, before him, posses what few records do exist on the burials there. At one time one of the original "colored" cemeteries, like others, it is now open to anyone regardless of color, creed, or nationality. Mr. McHardy oversees the maintenance of the cemetery, which, while neat and fairly regular, contains several unmarked and neglected gravesites.

It is interesting to note that there is a marker on the north side of Seville Street dedicated to those unmarked gravesites that, according to Mr. McHardy, were displaced or covered up during the widening of Monterey Boulevard. No record of these gravesites could be found. The earliest burial appears to be c1918 and there are approximately 257 marked gravesites.
