ALFORD/BEAUCHAMP/CURRY/SIMS/SINGLETARY
Will exchange information with anyone searching the above families, all were early settlers of Jackson County.

I am especially anxious to learn more about my great-great-grandmother, Rebecca Sims, wife of Charles Sims. Charles was born in North Carolina but was in Jackson County by 1830. I believe they were married around 1833-34, possibly in Jackson County. Who were Rebecca's parents? Where was she born?

My great-great-grandmother, was Nancy Barrett, b. April 8, 1845, Decatur County, Georgia, daughter of James and Susan Barrett. She married Shadrack Mershach Griffin, son of John and Elisa Griffin of Thomas County, Georgia. Shadrack or "Shade" as he was known by friends, lived in the Shady Grove Community until their deaths. Nancy died in 1907. Shade's death date unknown. I would like to hear from descendants of both the Griffin and Barrett lines. Incidentally, Louis and Martha (Boyett) Griffin, Thomas County, were Shade's grandparents.

My Alford line in Jackson County began with my great-grandfather, Wiley Alford, born in Georgia ca 1810, who was in Jackson County by early 1840s. He was married 1st to Susan Davis, my g-great-grandmother, and 2nd to Susan Traylor Morrison.Wiley was the son of Colin and Phereba Wooten Alford, Fayette County, Georgia.

The numerous descendants of Wiley meet each October, generally in West Florida, for the Wiley Alford Family Reunion.   Roberta Alford Folds  For information on family reunion e-mail   [email protected]

Subject: Christmas family

Shelly,
Thank you very much for you message. I have a James Riley Christmas (b. May
9, 1877 - d. Aug. 11, 1929) that married Eliza A. Parker. Riley was the son
of Willoughby Christmas and Vina Parker; I do not have the parents of Eliza
A. The children of Riley and Eliza were Willoughby, who married Ella Mae
Christmas; Tillman Lesane, who married Pearl T. Floyd; Vina, who married
Dow DuBose & Mary, who married Joseph Christmas.

I have at least two other Christmas/Parker marriages: Jerry Ellis (1816 -
abt 1870, father of Willoughby above)) married 2nd. Mary Parker; his son
by 1st wife Elizabeth Baker, Jesse A. married Margaret Ann Parker, younger
sister to Mary; both of these girls were daughters of Willoughby Parker &
Mary McKenzie. I think I need to work on the Parker family and that would
help me understand some of the Christmas connections.

Could you tell me how to get to the Parker Cemetery and Floyd's Chapel
Holiness Church? I have visited Mt. Vernon Methodist Cemetery, where Ira
Ellis Christmas (son of Jerry Ellis) & some family are buried. Thank you
again. Herbert

Herbert,
I saw your information on the net. I recall in the Parker cemetary
near Cades, S. C. there is a small stone for Riley Christmas. Do you
have any record of his name? Shelly Parker

We are Harry (Billy) and Ann L. McClellan. Ann was a Liberty County Larkins, she and Mitchell Larkins are first cousins. We have been doing research in our Families for years and We have copiled quite a bit of info. I am the elected Principle Chief of the Apalachicola Clan of Creek Indians. Our Family tree contains names like, Larkins, Batemans, Bakers, Shulars, McClellan, Neels,Hares (Hairs),. Chief Yellowhair had land at Aspalaga in about 1823, and he is a relative of Ann. Little is known to Liberty Co. people, that there was a Confederate Fort during the Civil War at Riccoe Bluff (Ricco) at Mile 56.5, Apalachicola River.. Mitchell Larkins Great.,  Great, Grandfatherwas stationed there in the Civil War, and he is buried next to the Cotton Landing Road in the south end of Liberty Co., just north of Sumatra. Ann & I lived at Florida River the first 5 years of our marriage.   Ann & Billy

great great grandparents:

William P. Gammon d. 31 Nov 1876 Confederate Soldier
Henrietta Gammon Davis b. 18 Sept 1839 d. 1916 (?)

I am almost positive the next two are my great great great grandparents:

Samuel Gammon(s) 1850 age: 41
Martha P. Gammon(s) 1850 age 45

The age is off on the 1850 census for William P. who is listed with them but his brother John W. shows up living with him on the 1860 census so I am pretty sure they are his parents. Thanks,  Laura

James Monroe WILLIAMS was born 06-30-1819 in Georgia and died 08-19-1882 in Bluff Springs, FL. He married Margaret MILES in Escambia County on 07-02-1846.

We are searching for information concerning other descendents, and the parents or siblings of James Monroe Williams and Margaret Miles Williams. They raised several children there and are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetary in Bluff Springs. Their children include Van Daniel, John Andrew, Minerva, James Monroe, Jr., Elizabeth Margaret, Rosamond, and Mary J. We are descendants through their second son John Andrew, born 1849 in Escambia County. We would appreciate any information concerning this family.

Margaret is a daughter of James A. Miles of Escambia County, FL. John received State of Florida Pioneer Certificates for both last fall. We were unable to prove our James M. Williams was in FL prior to March, 1845.

Our records show that James A. Miles was born c. 1798 in N.C. He married Lucretia Ellen Franklin. I can give you a list of Margaret's siblings if you would like. We don't have any descendants of her brothers and sisters, tho. Can you tell us more about Aquilla, William and Benjamin. How do you think they might be related to James Andrew?  John and Elizabeth

From: [email protected]
I'm trying to help my brother research an old song which we learned (sort of) from my father and uncles, who learned it from their grandmother or great-grandmother. I know that "Maw Pelham" lived her adult life in the Jackson Co. area, so I'm hoping maybe you or some of your "historians" might recognize the bits and pieces of this song. Here is my feeble attempt to transcribe the lyrics!!!

Chichi-wally-wog and a whole ga-lone (gallon?)
Chici-wally-wog and a val-yun (valiant?) Joe (show?).
Shoo, shoo, shoot a papa coon
Shoot a jack-arou (jack-rabbit?)
Crosscut a vander (?)
Chichi-wally-wog and (in?) splendor!

If you can be of any help on this unusual request, please e-mail me! Thanks, Sandy Pelham

Do you have information about cemeteries in Gadsden Co.? I recently hooked up with a cousin (we have same gggrandfather, George W. PHILLIPS, b 1852) and she said she believes that George W. PHILLIPS, b abt 1807 in NC, is buried in Quincy. He owned land in Leon Co. for years but was only enumerated there once (1850). He was a founding member of Providence Baptist Church in Gadsden Co. in 1843 and voted in the statewide election there in 1845, so It wouldn't be amazing if he was buried there. He died in Jackson Co. though, go figure.  Thanks, Denise

These are records pre 1908 and a copy of any deed, grant, etc may also be obtained for approx $2.00. The Fla records are 1824-1908 and contain a world of information.

On the book that I mentioned Saturday. What a great book. It lists most units that fought in Battle of Marianna and details the battle from start to finish and mentions many names of individuals. It also lists most of the wounded, captured, killed for both sides. I was surprised to find my great grandfather's unit (Co B, 15th Cav) and the mention of one of his brothers as well as my wife's great grandfther and the lst one to be wounded was another of my wife's kin. So that is a very good book as far as the history of NW Fla and Jax Co especially.

I would recommend those CD's to anyone as some of those who received Ala landgrants were later in Jax Co, Fla after the line was moved. As for me I found several of the Shiver family from Ga who came to NW Fla to get that cheap land, about $2.50 per acre. I also found data on the Fla records for 3 of my great great great grandfathers. So that is an exciting find and I haven't yet been all way through the CD's. (see Book page Jackson Co FL)

KING
If you are descended from one of the KING families who lived in Jackson or Gadsden Counties, Florida; Dale County, Alabama; or Decatur County, Georgia in the 1850's and 1860's, you may be related to me.

My ancestor, JOHN WESLEY KING, was born Sept 17, 1831. Some records show Alabama, some Florida, and some Georgia. He married Mary C. "Pollie" Duncan. There are unsubstantiated indications that she may have been the daughter of Thomas and Mary Duncan of Decatur County, Georgia. She was born Nov 25, 1827. She had a prior marriage to a HILLIARD and brought a child variously known as Jessie or Jack into the marriage. Decatur County, Ga records do show that a Mary Duncan married Jessie R. Hilliard on Dec 16, 1847. This couple is in the 1850 Decatur County census. This is prob my  Mary Duncan.

JOHN WESLEY KING and family are found in the 1860 census of Dale County, Alabama. John Wesley and Mary were both shown as born in Georgia. So was the 15 year old, who appears to be Jack or Jessie Hilliard. The youngest child, age one, was shown born in Alabama, indicating recent arrival. I have not found the family in an 1850 census, but with a 12 year old in 1860, they should have been a family somewhere in 1850. I also do not find them in 1870. However, by 1880, they were in Newton County, Texas. Here John Wesley is shown as having been born in Georgia and wife Mary in Florida. All of the children except one are shown born in Florida, including a 12 year old, so they must have been in Florida as late as 1868. A 1925 death certificate of one of John Wesley's children shows place of birth as "Jackson County, Florida".

In the 1900 census, John Wesley and Mary are in Jasper County, Texas in the home of a son. they died soon after. John Wesley King founded a large tribe of KING's in Texas and neighboring states. For a GEDCOM of about 600 of them ,see http://www.jas.net/~newton/gedcom.htm

I would like very much to locate the parents and other ancestors of John Wesley King, and connect to my Florida cousins.  Thanks, Kenneth R. King, 1105 Strawn Court, Flower Mound, Texas, 75028--

Today someone gave me a book tthat needs to be on website. It is :The West Florida War," Dale Cox, 1989, printed by Marianna Quick Print & Pub Co in cooperation with Jackson Publications, Rt 1, Box 87-C, Bascom, FL 32423.

Not indexed. 148 pages, soft cover. My Cox is a native of Two Egg and at time of this book, was employed with channel 7 in Panama City. This is a great book as it includes many names of those who were involved in Battle of Marianna as well as unit members, units involved, wounded, captured, killed, etc.

Another treasure: General Land Office - Automated Records - Florida, includes purchases of land by individuals from US Gov't during the 1800s. This is a CD from Bureau of Land Management. Borrowed it from a neighbor and found 3 gr-gr-gr grandfthers who had purchased land in Jax Co. Also a CD on Alabama records.

These are $15 each and contain a world of info as well as how the first state line was established and where it was. Will have to give you this later and answer my own question. These CD's contain dataon how to order copies of land deeds for about $2.00 each. Go to Supt of Documents Home Page at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs. The Burea of Land Management (Eastern States Office) has a home page but it is vast and I could never find the data on these CD's, so I wrote them and they sent me an order form from Supt of Docs.

Home page for BLM is www.blm.gov. If anyone needs added data on obtaining these two CD's they can E-Mail me. Thanks, John Arden

I have read this book and I agree it is very good. The lack of an index makes it difficult for research, but it is an easy read and good overview of the Jackson County, FL History. I was told the author moved away from Marianna, FL and went to another state.Wouldn't you have to get his written permission to put anything from it on the Web Page?

Tell me more about the CD's you found. Who? What? Where? Tell me more about it. Does it include references to the boundary problems between Calhoun Co. FL and Jackson Co. Dear Witchipoo,
WHO are you and WHERE are you. I, like Betty Smith, are linking up to "something big" on subject lines. I don't know where the last name JONES comes into the picutre but we have good information on William Taylor and Cintha (Cynthia) Lawless. OK, the Jones may have something to do with JONES LAWLESS whose wife was Cintha (Cynthia) and then they had a daughter Cynthia Lawless along with my Gr-grandmother Nancy Jane Lawless who married my Gr-Grandfather, Andrew Vincent McAllister in Barbour County, AL in 1847. I have the complete McAllister line all finiahed and have had it microfilmed by LDS (Film NO. 1598463) in 1997.

Note to Betty Smith - I was working to get all my finished (?) research on microfilm record for others to use and on World Family Tree CD #9.

The new possibilties of finding someone else interested in Lawless inspires me to pickup again and get it all analyzed, organized and into a Family Tree Maker 4.0 database. This I will do right soon but I have to finish my wife's Wright line from SC/FL since I have started it.

Witchipoo, do you have anything that we could use to help on the Lawless line or anthing connecting the Taylor or Jones to Lawless. I would like to hear from you. You and Betty please copy me on your emails and I will do the same. Betty has done so much to help me I feel ashamed but I was at a loss on the Lawless line, stuck you might say. My Dad and an older cousin that knew their grandmother when they were young teenagers had told me all they knew of her. She was an industrious lady. I wrote a story on her for our Clan McAllister of America Journal in the December 1995 issue and the CMA printed the database they had on A V & Nancy Jane McAllister. It had my grandfather and his sons and daughters on the front and back covers.

Thanks to you both! Sybert Maurice McAllister, 2360 Len Circle NW Hartselle, AL 35640-7769, 205/773-7823

Hi Betty,
May I say you and the others (the very important volunteers, bjs) are doing an outstanding job on the Jackson County WEB page. A little information for your cemetery research.

The Ephesus cemetery has a Line of unnamed sites, these are all DENARD's.

Working from the site furtherest from the church they are Alma Denard 1-3-1899 to 12-22-1934; Robert L Denard Jr. 12-17-1891 to 10-18-1953. The two closest to the church are (right to left) Robert L. Denard Sr. 8-10-1863 to unknown ; Lizzie Denard 12-??-1870 to 2-2-1909 ; the ones between these are children ,I don't have the names at this time. the small grave is unnamed boy born/died 12-22-1934.

When I can seperate the others I'll let you know. Just for Information the Denard's were in Jackson County at least as early as 1845. then around the late 1860 or early 1870's left for Texas. Robert  Dennard Sr. returned to Washington County in the mid 1890's and to Jackson County by 1910. Keep up the good work,   Howard Dennard

This is my father's family such as it is. I have not found hardly any of these people. The only one's I have found anything on is Stewart Barrentine. I found him listed WPA, and I found him and Amy in the Social Security Search, but that is it.
I hope that was all readable! I am new at doing this and have not found the best way to put it all down. I have more information on Ephrem and Francis Jane's children and their children, but that is it. Thank you for all your help. Thanks, Paula Johnson 334-794-0773

Did Cecil Hewett tell you that he has a cemetary on his land. He told me Isaac Perkins and his two wives, Martha #1 and Martha Ann Lanier PHILLIPS Perkins, are buried there, along with about 5-7 others. I'm sure he can tell you more about it. Thanks, Denise Ney
