Hi Betty, My name is Ken Smith and I noticed that your are a Jackson Co, FL researcher. The "BLACKSHEAR-KING Jackson County" caught my attention as I have done some research on Horace King who was a slave owned by my ancestor's brother, John Godwin. Horace King was a famous bridge builder in Al and GA and was my relative's foreman until my relative died. My ancestor was Wells Godwin, brother of John Godwin, the bridge builder. They built the Court House in Montgomery, AL. Wells and John had a brother named Thomas who went to Jackson County, FL in about 1833.

This is what I know about Thomas Godwin:

THE TIMES AND NEWS newspaper in Eufaula, Alabama - 1879, Tuesday, June 17, had Capt. Thos Godwin, aged 90 years of Jackson County, Florida died recently.

Also in same newspaper 1889: Capt. A. R. Godwin, merchant and farmer, of Cottondale, Florida., died on Sunday last. Believe this could be Alexander R. Godwin, who possibly was the eldest son of of Thomas. Cottondale is in Jackson County, Florida.

The Godwin brothers also had another brother named James A. Godwin who was the oldest. I have not been able to find him however. This is the family structure:
1 - John GODWIN
Died - Before 1800 Anson County, North Carolina
sp- Mary ?
2 - James A. GODWIN
Born - 22 Jan 1787 ??
2 - Thomas GODWIN
Born - 8 Dec 1789 North Carolina

Died - 2 Nov 1872 Butler County, Alabama
2 - Catherine GODWIN
Born - 14 May 1796 North Carolina
2 - John GODWIN
Born - 17 Oct 1798 North Carolina
Died - 26 Feb 1859 Russell County, Alabama
sp- Ann H. WRIGHT

Any information that you may have would be most helpful. I believe that there may have been an Alsobrook connection back in NC. Also, I am curious why he was referred to as CAPT. Thomas Godwin. Thank you. Ken

Need someone with information on the Governor John Milton Plantation "Sylvania" near Marianna. I think it is in the town of Greenwood. I was told that after the governor killed himself after the Civil War ended. Then it was put up for auction. Ths is how I come in to the story. My GGGrandfather James Riley Dykes
bought the plantation. This is where my GGrandfather John Vincent Dykes was raised. Also my Grandfather Walter Dykes and all brothers and sisters where born and lived until it was sold. Does any body have information on the auction and or where it is located?

Does anybody out there have any information on the Dykes name that moved from Marianna to Panama City. There are quite a few Dykes names in the phone book. My Grandfather talked about a cousin who lived in Panama City. Also does any body know if any of John Vincent Dykes's brothers or sisters moved to Panama City. Do they have any decendents there today, if so who are they? Thanks, Joyce

Subj: RE:RESERVATION (Dellwood)
Date: 97-06-26
From: [email protected] (Mary)
Betty, I have asked my husband if he had every heard of an Indian Reservation in Jackson Co, FL and he said that he had never heard of one. He was born in 1936 so he should know. I will ask around here to see if there every was one. I also looked in the History of Jackson Co(the black
book if you have one). Page 17 and 18 says that there was an attack by the Indians on white settlers in Jackson Co is found in Pensacola and
Tellahassee newspapers in 1842, reporting the murder of several members of a white family at Hickory Hill. This was during the last years of the
Seminole War, but there was no evidence that these murders were connected with the conflict.
In 1823 the Indians in Jackson Co came under the Treaty of Moultrie Creek, signed on Sept. 18. In consideration of their friendly relations
with the government, four chiefs were allowed to remain in the county and were awarded small reservations. Two chiefs, John Blount and Tuski Hajo, were granted eight squae miles of territory, with a four-mile frountage on the Apalachicola river. This tract of land was just east of present-day
Blountstown, county seat of Calhoun county. Mullato King and Emathlochee were granted a reservation which fronted four miles on the Apalachicola river, opposite present-day Chattahoochee. Econchatimo was given premission to reside in a tract of land four miles square, located on the Chattahoochee river, north of the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. ALL these reservations were ceded BACK to the United States in 1832 and 1833.

All I can tell you is that My ancestors were John Pinkney King b. abt 1818 in ? I found him in SC. in 1850 in Orangeburg Co. Edgefield Dist. He married we think Elizabeth Williamson. His son was Frankiln Elmore King, b. in SC. Franklin Elmore m. Nancy E. Baxter who was first m. to Sterlyn-Sterlin Brinson in Henry Co. AL. John Pinkney and Elizabeth had two daughters, Mary Debroah King b. SC.in that m. #1Joseph Lynn & #2 Hugh Robinson, And Eliza Ann King that m. James Henry Ferguson, Eliza was b. in Jackson Co. Fl. in 1854.
There is a story in the family that Eliza ann was adopted. I have not found proof of that yet.
Franklin Elmore and Nancy Had my grandfather James Eugene King b. in Jackson Co. FL. My Grandfather Eugene (Gene) King m. Magaline (Maggie) Smith 3/10/1900 in Jackson Co. Fl. They moved to Houston Co. AL. where all of their children were born. My father Lawrence Harold King was b. 4/1/1916 the last of four children. Daddy (Lawrence) m. my Mother Bessie Lee Forbes in Donaldsonville GA. in 1933. I was b. in Sneads, Jackson Co. Fl. 7/26/1947. All of us older children, there were 14 of us were b. in and around Jackson Co. Barbara Ann King was b. in 1945 in Delwood, she d. in Forth Wort, Texas in 1986 with cancer. Her name when she d. was Barbara Ann Carlson.
I talked to her daughter Barbara Ann(Jodi) the other night and she told me about not being able to get her mother's birth certificate because she was b. on an indian reservation in Delwood. That we would have to get it from NC. from the bureau of indian affairs.
The story about indian in our family was that Maggie Smith my Grandmother was part indian. Her father William (Billy) Smith was supposed to be indian but we have not found any proof of this. William (Billy) Smith m. Annie or Anna Sims somewhere in GA.AL.or Fl. He died after their youngest son Elie was b. and she remarried A Wright I believe he was F.E. that had been m. before and had two sons, Henry & Albert. Then they had a son together Malvin or Melvin Wright. Annie must have d. abt 1897 because on the 1900 Jackson Co. Malvin was three and was listed in two differant house holds. His older half sister, oldest daughter Mary Smith, Ready was one and and F.E. a widower was the other. I can't imagine Granny being indian she was were fair complected with the blondest hair anyone could ever have.
I have some old photo's to share with any kin. Please see what you can find out abt. Delwood and the reservation, I live a long way from Fl. and sometimes the mail just doesn't work when trying to find out things about ancestors. I will be glad to exachnge info with any Family members. Thank you so very much, Betty Potter

Subject: Grandfather, CRAWFORD, WILLIS b. 1865 d. 1953 (father Willis also) m. LOUANNA SPENCER B. 1871. 1964 (father W B SPENCER)
They lived in WALTON county most of their lives, but moved to Crestview, FL in the last ten or so years of their life & died there. They were buried in Walton.

There were about 7 or more in the SPENCER family--know there was an Uncle Buddy, who probably had same name as father. Buddy had one son GENERAL SPENCER, who also lived in De Funiak for some years. I also remember an "Aunt Lion," which must have been short for something else. Aunt Lion's daughter,
KATE DAVIS was a schoolteacher and married a man named HIGHTOWER.
Any info you might find on this family would be appreciated. My Aunt AGNES CRAWFORD SULLIVAN, lived in Crestview for many years and owned a grocery store, Her husband, DENNIS J. SULLIVAN, carried the mail.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I am a writer - focusing on early Florida history; primarily in the Red Hills regions of Leon and Jefferson County, however, there some of my families migrated in and out of the Jackson County area. Most of my stuff dates to the early 1800's - with data about the first settlers who came from Georgia, the Carolinas, and some of the original American Colonies. There are over 500 surnames in my data base and I will gladly share info on specific families if I can. I don't have a web page to link to, but feel free to pass my screen name on to anyone you think can profit from a brief inquiry. Re your family .... I have stuff on MILES, ( decendents of AQUILLA MILES b Bef 1752 and HARRIET GIROUDE ) / TAYLOR ( decendents of JAMES b. 1615 originally of Carlisle, England and JOHN b abt 1750 ) and / WHITE ( related to ALSTON, PALMER and others ) Does your WHITE line go back as far as ENRIQUE WHITE who was a Governor of West Spanish Florida ? Let me know if I can be of assistance - and best of luck with your page !! [email protected]

George Phillips #1 had a son named William. I found William with his parents in the 1850 Leon Co. Census. His birthdate calculated to abt. 1845. I
found Willaim with his wife, Caledonia, and brother, George #2, in the 1870 Jackson Co. Census, and again his birthdate calculated to abt. 1845. George #1 had a son named James F., born abt. 1842. George #2 also named a son James Franklin. I don't know James Henry Clay Phillips , but George #2 named a son Henry Enalda (my ggrandfather). I haven't run across any Thomas's.

George #1's wife was Martha A. Lanier. I'm very interested in this little tidbit! I don't know when George #1 died, or where. mailto:[email protected]

Long time, no see. Checked your Jackson County Web Page, could not find a reference to a James W. Register. Clue me in. I did notice a Denise Ney looking for 2 George W. Philips folks. I have information on them but could not find an address for her. The younger George W. Philips is in the "Register Family Records" book that you have a copy of, pages 6 & 7. I have other information on him, from estate records. He is buried in Damascus Cemetery, I think Jackson County. He died in 1921. I just discovered his marker on a quick trip through there. I beleive him to be a nephew of Christchaney PHILIPS Register, wife of Joseph Allen. One of her children (my great-grandmother's brother) Daniel is also buried there.
Am still working on Joseph Allen REGISTER's line. Till Later, Happy Hunting, Frances Keith

I would be very interested in corresponding with anyone who is researching the interrelated families of POPE, TANNER, SCURLOCK, YONGE, WHITE and others who settled in Jackson Co., Fla. in the 1820s. WILLIAM STUART POPE, and wife, Harriet, lived in Sneeds and are buried there. William had a brother, JOHN M. POPE who settled in Jackson County very early, but apparently moved away. William S. Pope's sister, ELIZABETH POPE married JOHN TANNER in 1816 in Savannah, Ga. and settled on the site of Chattahoochee, Fla. She later moved to Marianna, where her son, JOHN TANNER, JR. was a lawyer and Capt. in the Confederate Army. John Tanner, Jr. married ANN YONGE, sister of CHANDLER COX YONGE. Another sister of William Pope, CATHERINE POPE, married Rev. Dr. DAVID L. WHITE of Quincy. Another relative was MARY ANNE POPE, who married WALTON L. SCURLOCK in Jackson Co., Fla. in 1845. Any information on any of these families would be greatly appreciated. Erick Montgomery
