Early Records of Jackson Co FL 1821-1848

What are your ideas on marriages that took place between 1821 (date Jackson County was created) and 1848 (date the first marriages are currently available)? Doesn't it seem odd that there are NO marriage records for that time period? I'm certain there were marriages then. I talked to a person, who takes care of the records in the basement of the courthouse, and he indicated many records were thrown away by a former Judge. Hmmm...but, thinking on this, why do the marriages that are available begin in book "A"? Was there another book "A" that preceded this one? Could some of these records be in territorial papers? This is just so odd to me. Were are these early records, anyone please help???? Thanks, Cindy Sloan [email protected]

Hi Betty,
Love the site and would be glad to help. I have not worked on mine in a while due to the amount of work I am doing on my database.
Carpenter Family of Grand Ridge, Jackson Co FL
In addition I have published a 1850 and 1860 census and will be glad to do lookups. My personal database includes many eastern county families (Dellwood, Grand Ridge, Sneads, etc.) Families have been there since 1825. Also I subscribe to the paper and have been creating a database of obits, marriages, etc. for the past few papers. It is incomplete (due to time)
but will do lookups. Randall Carpenter

I am also researching Auston's. My gggrandmother was Melinda "Dink" Auston (b. December 12, 1856). I believe (but have no concrete proof) that were parents were Andrew Jackson Auston (b. ~1820 VA) and Britannia Ammons?? (b. ~1827 GA) They were first found in the 1850 Henry Co., Al census and then in the Coffee and Geneva census. I would appreciate any help in this family and I'll be glad to share my ged.com file with you, if you'd like.
Thanks for your help! TOnia Porter

Subj: Governor Milton's Plantation "Sylvania"

From: [email protected]
A family (Dykes) story is that the Sylvania Plantation after the Governor's death was put up for auction. My GGGrandfather was to have bought it. That would be my GGGrandfather James Riley Dykes. My GGrandfatherJohn Vincent Dykes was born befor the Civil War but after the war he was raised there. There my Grandfather was born. His birth place was Greenwood according to his birth records.
Now to what I would like to see if you can find for me is. Was Governor Milton's Plantation put up for auction after the Civil War. Were was Sylvania Plantation. All you said " it was near Marianna, Fl." The town of Greenwood is less then 10 miles to the north of Marianna. I have a county road map of Jackson County. So if you can get me a road intercetion and town I can locate the location on my map. Also if there was an auction, then who bought the plantion so Ican see if it matches with my GGrandfathers name.
Good luck, Wiley Vincent Dykes Jr.

I'm looking for information regarding Eliza Byrd Varnum (Lila?) (or her husband, Henry Albert (AB) Pelham) who are buried in Collins Mill cemetary in Graceville. They were my great grandparents. I know all the Pelham-family relations, but know nothing of the Varnums. Were they a Jackson Co. family?

There are 2 Varnums listed in the 1885 Fl State cenuss: to be found on page 0216. One was C.U. Varnam and the other J. R. Varnum.

Subj: Re: Dykes-Simmons Family of Jackson County, FL
Date: 97-05-18
From: [email protected]

Thanks for the message. My wife was raised in Malone. We now have quite abit of data on her ancestor, John Pinkney King who came to Jackson County in 1825 or so from SC along with Elias Windham, who we now think was a relative. John Pinkney King had a large plantation south of Malone, one source places it toward Merritt's Mill Pond but I don't know. We have a copy of his will made after he joined confederate army at age 43 and was wounded and died at army hospital in Atlanta. His son was also a confederate soldier and surrendered in Fla at end of war. My grandmother was raised between Neal's Landing and Bascom. Her father, Calvin Dykes married Laura Simmons after his family had died during war. He was in Confed army. He was 36 or 38 and she ws 18, the dau of L.M. Simmons, Malone Area. My great - great grandfather, James Dykes, was a Lt in Marianna homeguard during the war.
One of the Dykes family had a plantatioin near Campbelton, later known as Newbury Plantation. When the yankees came into Fla they burned their crops, rather than have the yankees get them. My grandmother's cousin, a Simmons was one of the ones involved in the murder of a man after civil war as told in Jckson Co History by Shofner. However, he wasn't convicted but was only found guilty of being present at the time. This was the man that the people thought so little of that the sheriff didn't even look for him after he came up missing. The governor sent an investigator to Jackson County to look for him. My grandmother had told me that story earlier, and Mr John McAnulty, now deceased, also told me the story later. My gr-Grandfather Dykes taught school at a one room school just below Ala line above Malone. He sold his property to a relative and moved to Alabama, between Ashford and Cottonwood in 1896.

As to the Ferry, I don't know exactly where it was but am told that it was down the road behind the courthouse to the river. My gr-gr grandmother, Jane Dykes, purchased a slave to work for her at the Inn and Ferry. He was such a good worker that she used coins from the ferry to purchase his wife. The bag of coins was so heavy that he had to carry it on his back. That is a story that has come down through the family over the years. One of the family, a son of Jane and James was William , Bill, Dykes, who is said to have had the first grist mill on Merristt's at the head of the pond. There are quite a few Dykes kin in Jackson County today.

My wife's sister-in-law, Doris Conrad Petty, was also raised in Malone and has done quite a bit of research in the unorganized files in courthouse basement and has a lot of data on the area. However, she's not on line. She has quite a bit of data on Baxter and Hatcher families of Jackson County. We now live in Dothan. Hope some of this will be of use to you. Thanks for your web page. One of my neighbors is Larry Register, former Mayor of Dothan, AL, who is doing quite a bit of family research and I plan to tell him abut your homepage. Good luck! [email protected]

STEWART, GAY, SWEARINGEN, BENEFIELD, DANIELS, PILCHER, GAY, DAVIS.
I am searching for anyone who has more information on cemeteries and churches of Jackson County; (origins, histories, etc.). I have a publication that was done in 1942 on churches of Jackson County, but would very much like to attain copies of the actual church information (births, deaths, baptisms, marriages, etc.)

Would like more info on the family of John STEWART and Carolyn GAY who married in 1856 in Jackson Co. I believe she is the daughter of John GAY and Zilpha ?? (possibly Swearingen). Need proof of this... maybe a bible record? John STEWART was a Baptist Preacher around Grand Ridge and Sneads area. He and Carolyn are buried in Sims Cemetery. He died in 1919 and Carolyn died in 1921. If you know of any living relatives of this couple I'd like very much to contact them. Thank you. [email protected]

I am researching Irwin Toole, father of Calvin J. Toole.
Irwin moved to Early Co Ga in 1839, from Barnwell Co SC. He moved to
Jackson Co Fla. in Dec. of 1852. His first wife was Sarah ------? She died
and he remarried Martha Hix in Jackson Co Fla in 1855. I am also looking
for information on William Jackson McCorkle. Born 1848 in Clay Co Ga. moved
to Fla after 1870, I think it was Jackson Co but I am not positive. His
wife was Alice Grice Hepburn. She was found living in Early Co Ga in1900,
a widow. I think that William may have died in Fla. I would like to know
where he is buried and his date of death. Last, but just as important as the rest, I am looking for info on John Jefferson Creel. Born in Fla. I think his father was Silas Creel, son of Solomon Creel from Washington Co. Fla. John was born app. 1852 and died 1887 in Henry Co Ala.

Dear Betty Mae,
Thankyou so very much for finding the information on my Dickson family of Marianna. My search for my Confederate ancestor came up positive! While looking through 1850 Florida census records dated Nov.12th,1850 I found the name of Nicholas M. Dickson who was my Great-grandfathers older brother. My Gr-great-grandfather was Marmaduke A. Dickson who was 39 years of age at the time of the 1850 census taking.
A note I made to myself a few years ago has me convinced this Nicholas M. Dickson is the same Captain Marmaduke Nicholas Dickson who was born in Greenwood,Fla. in 1842 and served in the 3rd Florida Regiment (Confederate Army) in Gen. J.J. Finleys Brigade. I can only guess he swapped his middle name around sometime before the war or maybe the census record got it down the wrong way.
Again let me say thankyou for your help in my search. If I can ever be of service to you in tracking down any Tennessee records please feel free to contact me by E-Mail or by snail-mail at: W.D.Messamore P.O.Box 33 Heiskell,Tn. 37754

ALDAY, BARBER, BOYETT, DANLEY, GAUSE, GEORGE, KINSEY, LYNN, and ROBINSON, from Gadsden and Jackson Co., FL and Decatur Co., GA.
Josiah Dunham Boyett was born 31 Jul 1833 in Leon Co. FL
His father was Issac Boyett, b. North Carolina C. 1795, d. 28 Feb 1857 in Decatur Co., GA. Issac married Margaret Singletary. Their children were George L., Sarah Ann, Joseph A., Mary B., John Henry Sr., William T., Emily P., Josiah Dunham, Issac J., Jacob Y., and Feriba Ann. As far as I know Josiah was the only one of their children who relocated to Jackson County.

Josiah married Missouri George. Their children were Margaret Boyett, Missouri Boyett(married Andrew L. Park), Emily Frances Boyett(married John E. Robinson), Mary Boyett, Sarah Ann Lanora Boyett(married William Bryant Gause), and Robert H. Boyett(married Irene Griffin).

Sarah Ann Lanora, daughter of Josiah and Missouri, married William Bryant Gause. They also resided in Jackson Co. Their children were Harvey Clifton Gause(married Ida Dixie Day), Clyde Missouri Gause(married Jesse Ernest Powell), Thomas JosiahGause(married 1st-Lona Henderson Hawkins, 2nd Bertha Lee Kinswan), Carlie Mae Gause(married Charles Everett Day), and John Robert Gause.

I went to the FL Archives a few weeks ago and found Josiah's Confederate pension file. There was not much info, but it did verify that Josiah indeed was married to Missouri George, as she also applied for and received a widows' pension after his death in 1910. I have also had Vital Records here in Jacksonville look for a death certificate for him, but have had no luck there.
Thanks again for your help. If you need any info from Jacksonville area, don't hesitate to call on me. JAN

Thanks for your fast response to my query. Yes, I saw the query about Henry Boyett, but as yet I can't tie him to my family. Josiah and Missouri's children were-Margaret, Missouri, Emily Frances(my great-grandmother), Mary, Sarah Ann Lanora, and Robert H. They lived a portion of their lives in Decatur Co., GA. I found it extremely coincidental that you emailed me. Both my mother and aunt were born in Marianna. My mother 3/1945 and my aunt 1/1949. There names were Luana and Andrea Granger (respectively). Their parents were John A. and Louise MacKinnon Granger. Their former house was/is located across from Wendy's Hamburger's and directly next to the Captain D's seafood restaurant in Marianna. My grandfather (John Granger) was born in Monticello, FL, but I'm not exactly sure where my grandmother was born. My grandfather, deceased in 1985, has a surviving sister residing in Tallahassee. She keeps up with most all of the family history. I can try to help - I am familiar with some Daffin's & MacKinnon's which some are still living in Marianna. Myself, I was raised in Dothan, AL - just 40 minutes north. I'm currently in Las Vegas, NV living with my father (Warnberg). If you want to, you can add me to your list of people to keep in contact with and I'll help you anyway I can.

I'm visiting your page for the first time, and want to introduce myself. I am Sandy Pelham and I'm researching my father's family. Both the Pelhams and the Glasses called Jackson Co home for a time, as my grandparents met and married there, and most of my grandfather's family is buried there!

I'll be attending our annual family reunion on Sunday, May 4, at Collins Mill in Graceville.

I'm interested in any information involving Pelhams and associated families. My primary interest at the moment is in knowing when they came first to Jackson Co. I am working on the assumption that John Mansford Pelham was first to arrive. Maybe you or some of your JC historians can help me with this! Thanks, Sandy Pelham

Looking for any information on children of William A. Hughes and Priscilla A. Davis who lived in Jackson Co., during 1860-1880. Sarah A. E. Hughes was married to Lewis Rivers who, according to Civil War books, survived the war. His parents are buried near Marianna, but she and Rivers disappear after 1860. My ggrandfather was married there while living in Henry Co., AL, and I figure he had family in that county.. Two brothers, George and
Wyatt moved to Robertson Co., TX abt 1880 and list their children as having been born in FL., but I can fine no trace of them.
Thanks, Linda

I am doing a geneology history search on my last name (Dykes). I could use a little help. My problem is this, my GGGGrandfather came to Marianna in 1845, this I know. I also know about when he was born. Ido not know the date of his death or the cemetery he is in. I have been told there are 2 Dykes cemeteries in Jackson Co. The one I went to was over by the town of Sneed. Located on Dykes
Cemetery Rd. The other is just on the outskirts of Marianna. I have not been to this one . I now have directions to it. Next time I will go there. I live in Orlando so I do not know when next time is. I would like you to look up a James Dykes Jr. He died between 1860 and 1870 is all Iknow. He is not in the Dykes Cemetery out by Sneed.
I was told by my dad that just after the Civil War Governor Milton killed hiself. At the familyEstate auction my G G Grandfather bought the house and property. Is there any info available about this . It is in Greenwood is all Iknow. This is wear my G Grandfather and my Grandfather were born is all I know. You can E-Mail me so we can correspond.
Thank You, Joyce Dykes

Fifth governor, October 7, 1861, to April 1, 1865
John Milton was born near Louisville, Ga., on April 20, 1807. A descendant of the English poet John Milton, he practiced law, first in a number of Georgia and Alabama communities and later in New Orleans. Before coming to Florida in 1846, Milton allegedly killed an adversary in a duel.
After entering Florida politics, Milton became a statewide force in the Democratic party, serving as a presidential elector in 1848 and as a member of the 1850 House of Representatives. A vigorous states-righter, Milton encouraged the early secession of Florida from the Union.
As governor, Milton stressed FloridaÆs ability to serve as an important source of food and salt for the Confederate war effort. On April 1, 1865, as the southern cause was collapsing, John Milton shot himself at "Sylvania," his home near Marianna. In his last message to the legislature, he had said, "Death would be preferable to reunion." (BJS)

The names I'm researching in Jackson Co. are BAZZELL (BASIL), PHILLIPS,
and BROWN.

The earliest Bazzell that I know of was Isham H. Bazzell (b abt 1803 in
SC) m to Susan Trussell (b abt 1805 in GA). I am descended from their
second son James Alfred (b abt 1829 in Jackson Co.) and his wife Nancy
C. Brown (b abt 1832 in Jackson Co.). I have some information on the
Isham H. clan, mostly from Census records. James and Nancy appeared in
the 1850 and 1860 Jackson Co. Census and disappeared after that. I
found information at LDS that says Isham d 1876 and Susan in 1869. I
would like death dates for James and Nancy, and Isham's other kids if
it's easy to find. I'm not sure where they're buried. I found a
reference to Isham's youngest son, Samuel Isham, being born in Lovedale
Com., Greenwood, Jackson, FL.
The PHILLIPS are more elusive. I cannot find George W. Phillips (b
1820's? in SC)in either GA or FL Census records. He supposedly settled
near Dellwood, FL. He was married to Martha A. Lanier (b FL) and they
had a son, George W. (b 1848 or 1852 in Jackson Co.). I find George II
in the 1870 Census as an 18 yo living with William Phillips, 25 (a
brother?) and Caledonia Phillips (22) in Jackson Co. This would make me
think that George I and Martha are dead by 1870. I find George II and
his wife Laura J. Bazzell in the 1900 and 1910 Census, but not anywhere
in 1880. Information about George I is what I want most -- birth date
and place, parents and siblings. Infomation on Martha's family would be
great too. Death dates for George I and Martha would be helpful; I
don't know where they're buried. *Anything* on George I would be
helpful!

I am researching my PHILLIPS line in Jackson Co. The earliest ancestor
is a George W. Phillips. He is very elusive and I was wondering if you
may know anything that might help me track him down.

A distant relative that my uncle spoke to in Attapalgus, GA said that
George (b 1810 - 1820? in SC) and two brothers moved to Decatur Co.,
GA. The two brothers stayed in GA and settled in the Bainbridge and
Colquitt area. George settled first west of the Flint River in GA and
then moved to Jackson Co. and settled in Dellwood, near Mariana. George
m. Martha A. LANIER and they had a child, George W. Phillips b. 31 Jan
1848 or 1852 in Jackson Co. A family Bible I've never seen has him born
in 1848. Census records indicate he would have been born in 1852 and
are always consistent.

I cannot find George, SR. in Census records in GA or FL. I find George,
JR. (these are my designations so I can keep them straight) in the 1870
Census for Jackson Co. as an 18 yo. living with a William and Caledonia
Phillips, 25 & 22 yo. respectively. I don't find George, Jr. again
until 1900 enumerated with his wife Laura J. BAZZELL Phillips and
several of their children. I have lots of information on this family
and even pictures. I also found George and Laura in the 1910 Census in
Jackson Co. Both died in Attapalgus, GA, she in 1919 and he in 1924,
but I don't find him in the Decatur Co. Census for 1920. Census records
also indicate that George, Jr. was a farmer and owned land.

I am looking for information on George, Sr.'s siblings, parents, and
where in SC they were from. I'm also trying to figure out who was in
Attapalgus that George, Jr. and Laura went there in their old age.

Also, information I have on one of my BAZZELL's (b 1848) indicates that
he was born in the Lovedale Com., Greenwood, Jackson, FL. Do you know
what Lovedale Com. is? When I found the Bazzells in the 1870 Census,
they were all living near each other because they were lsited as
consecutive dwellings and families on the same page. I wonder if enough
of them stayed in the same area that they eventually became a
"community."
Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Denise Ney
