4. Scenic
Drives
State Highway 271 runs along the Lake seminole Recreation Area and
offers views of rolling hills.
State Highway 167 runs along the Florida
Caverns State Park, and has a very large area designed to appear exactly as it
did hundreds of years ago.
5. Lake Seminole and the Jim Woodruff Lock
and Dam.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers welcomes you to Lake Seminole,
a recreational lake blessed with natural beauty. A visit to Lake Seminole
provides a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities -- it is a great place
to fish, camp, boat, picnic or sightsee.

answered by park rangers who are on duty year round at the Resource Management
Office and out on the project or by calling our office at (912) 662-2001, Monday
through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Rules and regulations regarding use of public
lands and waters are posted at all Corps operated recreation areas.

SELECTED HISTORIC SITES:
1. JACKSON
COUNTY COURTHOUSE (1921), on Courthouse Square, is a traditional county
center. The obelisk honors the men who fought in the Battle of Marianna
(September 27, 1864), when Confederate forces halted 700 Union cavalry from
advancing from Pensacola.
2. FRANCIS ELY HOUSE (1840), 242 West
Lafayette Street, is a fine two story Greek Revival house with four huge two
story Corinthian columns. Ely was a pioneer. Later Francis Carter was a Judge on
the Florida Supreme Court.
3. THEOPHILUS WEST HOUSE (1840), 403
Putman Street, is a two story clapboard Classic Revival house built by John
Davis for his daughter Rebecca who wed West. Dr. West was the Confederate
surgeon with Robert E. Lee at Appomattox.
4. MARIANNA WOMAN'S CLUB
(1864), North Caledonia Street, was the home of pioneer Joseph T. Russ, and
was used as a library and clinic in its long history.
