Hi Betty,
I've collected confederate veterans items for the past 20 yrs. The medal you have is the medal given to members attending this reunion. The riderless horse is there for the death of John Breckenridge. The other ribbon is given to vets. to show what state they came from. it was a common thing for vets to do, in combining the two items.

Hi,
This appears to be a reunion medal from the Louisville, Kentucky United Confederate Veteran reunion in 1905, and issued probably by the Florida Division for its delegates. Do you know who wore it? The horse could denote a cavalryman. I have not seen one of these medals previously, so don't know if all had horses on them.
Thanks,
Bob McLendon

The ribbon you have is from the 1905 United Confederate Veterans convention held in Louisville. The UCV was organized in 1889 and held its last meeting in 1952. It was composed of veterans of the Confederate armed forces.

That's a hard question to answer. Obviously, the number of exisiting medals would be small, but many collectors would have a wide variety. The later the medal, the more valuable it becomes due to the lack of veterans, In 1951 there were only three veterans who attended the last reunion; whereas, hundreds attended around the turn of the century.

Your thoughts about placing the ribbon in a museum is great. Perhaps the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond would be interested.

My name is David Reynolds. I live just west of Malone, Fl., on Baxter Rd. I noticed the ribbon on your website, I couldn't help but noticing since I'm originally from Louisville, Ky. I got on the net to try and get you an E-mail address in Louisville, to no avail. I was able to get you a name, address, and phone number, in Louisville, of a well know local historical society. They will probably be able to help you, or at least be able to direct you in the proper direction. Try contacting: The Filson Club, 1310 S. Third St., Louisville, Ky. 40208. Their phone number is (502) 635-5083.
Best Of Luck, Dave

Betty:
I am certain that there are ribbon experts, or collectors that can help with those details, but there is a great picture of some members of the Kentucky Orphan Brigade at that reunion in the book "Southerners", by the late tv personality Charles Kuralt. They are wearing medals.

1905 U C V Ribbon

This Ribbon was found in a trunk this weekend in Jackson Co., FL. The oldest letter in the trunk was 1932 the earliest letter was 1918.

We know Willoughby Miles was in the 2nd FL Calvary. The horse on the ribbon is some kind of medal and the round picture is some kind of hard paper.

At the 1905 Louisville UCV Reunion did the infantry have a man on their reunion ribbon or was the reunion just for the Calvary

We took the ribbon to the Civil War Museum in Marianna and they placed a starting value of $500.00 on the ribbon as it is in mint condition.

We are not selling the ribbon but would like information on the reunion and anything else anyone can tell us about the Reunion.
