Dampier Cemetery

Location: Four tenths of a mile south of Inverness on Highway 41 South.

Statement of Historic Significance: The settling of the frontier throughout Florida closely paralleled Civil War reconstruction. Families descended into this area from Georgia and the Carolinas. Many of the families seeking land for homesteading became the historic pioneer settlers of the frontier town called Tompkinsville (renamed Inverness).

The Dampier, Tompkins, Boswell, and Hampton families settled the area by the late 1860's and are buried in the small, oak-shaded Dampier Cemetery.

The following persons represent some of the most significant contributors of county heritage during the last half of the 1800's. This cemetery is of particular interest because the lives of the person's buried there reveal so much of our county's history.
