PASSENGER LISTS

The Pitfalls - A Personal Experience

My personal search for my great-great-grandfather's immigration will illustrate a possible pitfall in the passenger list search. After using all the regular genealogical methods, we had determined that my great-great-grandfather immigrated, along with his wife and three sons - between 1855 and 1858. However, we did not know at which port they had entered the United States, and searches of the indexes for all the ports proved fruitless. We also searched through all the book indexes, but once again failed to find Adam McJilton (or Magilton), his wife Sarah Jane, and sons Thomas, Samuel, and Joseph.

Many times in the past five years we'd gone back to the search, but were always unsuccessful. Then one day my Dad started thinking about what else "Magilton" might look like if written carelessly. After a couple trials, he tried "Hog--------" and there it was in Brian Mitchell's Irish Passenger Lists 1847-1871 - HOGELTON, Adam - age 30, with wife Sarah 25, and sons Thomas 5, Samuel 2, and Joseph 9m, on the ship Superior, arriving in Philadelphia May 13, 1856, from Clogholl, County Londonderry. A similar entry was found in Filby's Passenger and Immigration Lists Index.

The long-sought-after Manifest is clearly written, recording the passengers as "Adam Magiltin - 25 - Carpenter, Sarah - 23 - Wife, and Thomas - 3, Samuel - 2, and Joseph 9 mos - Children."

The lists record 109 sailings including about 4,500 passengers. New York was the most popular destination, with Philadelphia second.

We can't do much about the luck, but this book will help you with interpreting the handwriting. Drawing on years of experience searching through colonial records, the author demonstrates a simple technique for reading colonial handwriting. Sam
