Helpful Addresses

[Note: the following are ALL links, down to the pharase "National Addresses"]

When writing to any of the following, it is useful to enclose international postage vouchers. When making enquiries, give as much detail as possible. See Sending Funds Overseas
You address your letter more or less like this:
Name Surname
Some Street
Townland
Kilmore, County Roscommon
Ireland
There aren't any postal codes in the Republic of Ireland, so don't worry about using them. The postcodes for those who wish to write to addresses in Northern Ireland can be found at the UK Postcode Search. If you know the townland name for rural addresses please use it along with the remainder of the address. It is an important part of our heritage which is in danger of disappearing.

By the way, you can probably save yourself some money if you send your letter first class instead of air mail -- from most of the civilized world, international mail all goes on an airplane, not on a ship; no sense paying extra for what you get anyway.

The OS map numbers frequently referred to are the maps created during the Griffiths Valuation, 1848-1864. These are not the current OS Discovery series of maps. The original mid-1800s maps have been scanned by the Republic of Ireland Valuation Office (since Griffiths original intent was for a tax valuation) and are now available in hard copy or CD-ROM. You can find information about acquiring these maps at the Valuation Office Web Site

Obtaining Overseas Funds

[To get the Irish Punt "" do Alt 156 - i.e., hold down the Alt key and type 156 on the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key.]

The recipient doesn't have to go to the PO to exchange coupons for stamps. Go to one of your local stamp and coin shops. They usually have current stamps for many countries to sell for not much more than face value.

You CAN buy Irish stamps from the U.S. Postal Service. Just call 1-800 STAMP24 and place your order. That is the phone number of the Philatelic Fulfillment Service Center. You have to buy them in blocks of 4. A block of four 52p stamps costs $3.35. There is also a $1.00 shipping and handling fee. It takes a couple of weeks to receive them.

There's a US Postal Service web page with Domestic and
International Rate Calculators to
determine how much it costs to mail the average (1oz) letter
from the US to other countries:
http://www.usps.gov/navbar.htm

Ruesch International Bank
700 Eleventh Street NW
Washington DC USA 20001-1507
or
608 5th Ave.
N.Y, N.Y. 10020
Phone # 1 800 292-4685
also
Also a branch in Los Angeles, California,
telephone 800-696-7990.

Or just call FREEPHONE 1-800-124-2923
or order by telephone 800-424-2923 and credit card.

For a small fee (about $US 3.00) they will snail mail you a sterling cheque made payable to the party of your choice. Useful for paying for copy birth certificates in UK, etc.

United States Postal Service
International reply coupons provide a convenient method for you to prepay replies from foreign countries. You can send your correspondent one or more coupons, which may be purchased for $1.10 each at local post offices. Your correspondent exchanges the coupon for postage in his or her country. Include the IRC in your correspondence and mention that the IRC can be redeemed for return postage to the States. One coupon should be enough to ship a standard 1 oz. letter. Many folks normally include 2 IRC's just to be on the safe side.

Some agencies accept MasterCard or VISA, which automatically converts the currency at the rate in effect at the time of the transaction.

For completeness, one should mention that most large banks maintain an international currency service. They will mail you a bank check (or you can pick the check up at a branch) payable in another country's currency. They charge a fee which is usually $25. American Express will do the same thing.
