April 2007-December 2023
NOTE: I am searching for anyone who might be descended from or related to my Olar, Paskar, Toderiuc, and Ciopei ancestors. I also am searching for members of the Giber/Krusniski family of Baudette, Minnesota. In February 2008, I had the joy of making contact with the descendants of my grandfather's older brother Mihai Olar. If you are a relative, or think you might be, I encourage you to please contact me by clicking here. See also our Family Search pages with family photographs hosted by Maritza Hreniuc in French, English, and Romanian. Thanks!
In researching my father's genealogy, I have received invaluable assistance from my parents and aunts and uncles and cousins. I must give special mention to my cousin Greg Budovec, for whose generosity in sharing old family photos and mementos I am very grateful. I have also greatly benefited from the kindness of my distant cousins Mariana Zotic and Vitalii Eremeiko, descendants of my grandfather's older brother Michael.
Among the greatest helps to our genealogical research are the vital records of my grandparents' home village of Tereblecea, which the Mormon Church has microfilmed and catalogued among the records of Tereblecea Noua (Porubne or Deutsche-Tereblestie). Last but not least, I also have benefited from the help of The Bukovina Society of the Americas. Their website is a storehouse of very helpful information, and I have relied on some of the Society's articles to help write this account of the Olar genealogy.
The account of our Olar lineage continues with the sixth through the ninth generations as follows:
138. TEODOR OLARIU, son of Ilie and Zenovia Olar, born 30 Jan. 1912 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Teodor was born at house no. 650, and the midwife at his birth was Irina Budeiu of Starcea. Teodor was baptised 2 Feb. 1912 by Father Dimitrie Georgescu, and his godparents were Leon Nimigean and Elisaveta, widow of Ciprian Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea, and Iulita, wife of Georgie (or "Sergie"?) Cuciurean, peasant farmer of Opriseni. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ilie al lui Ioan Olariu, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Zenovia nascuta Daniliuc din Starcea." It is all but certain that Teodor and his mother Zenovia and brother Dimitrie are are the Zenovia Olar and her sons Dumitru Olar and Teodor Olar who are listed among the victims of Russian Communist tyranny on page 57 of Ion Cretu's 333-page history, Tereblecea: un sat la margine de tara ("Tereblecea: A Village on the Border of the Country"), published in 2010. From Cretu's history, we learn that Dumitru Olar, deported 13 May 1941, was a son of Zenovia Olar, who was deported exactly one month later. Cretu also says that when the Communists sent Zenovia away, she left behind real estate consisting of one house, one barn with stables, and 4 hectares of land, all of which were left to be administered by her other son Teodor Olar. At the time, Teodor's father Ilie Olar was in Canada. At this time I do not know if Ilie ever reunited with his wife Zenovia and sons Teodor and Dimitrie, nor do I know what became of Zenovia and her sons. Sadly, it's quite probable that Zenovia and Dimitrie died victims of the horror of Communism. Teodor's father Ilie, however, ended up settling permanently in Montreal, Canada, where he died and was buried in 1960.
139. DIMITRIE OLARIU, son of Ilie and Zenovia Olar, born 6 Sept. 1914 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Dimitrie was born at house no. 650, and the midwife at his birth was Irina Budeiu of Stircea. Dimitrie was baptised 7 Sept. 1914 by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godparents were Leon Nimigean and Elisaveta, widow of Ciprian Gabor, peasant farmers of Tereblecea. His baptismal record identifies his parents as "Ilie Olariu, fiul lui Ioan Olariu si al sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Bodor, lucrator din Tereblecea" and "Zenovia fiica lui Cosma Daniliuc si a sotiei sale Nastasia nascuta Rusu din Stircea." It is all but certain that Dimitrie and his mother Zenovia and brother Teodor are are the Zenovia Olar and her sons Dumitru Olar and Teodor Olar who are listed among the victims of Russian Communist tyranny on page 57 of Ion Cretu's 333-page history, Tereblecea: un sat la margine de tara ("Tereblecea: A Village on the Border of the Country"), published in 2010. At the time, Dimitrie's father Ilie Olar was in Canada. At this time I do not know if Ilie ever reunited with his wife Zenovia and sons Teodor and Dimitrie, nor do I know what became of Zenovia and her sons. Sadly, it's quite probable that Zenovia and Dimitrie died victims of the horror of Communism. Dimitrie's father Ilie, however, ended up settling permanently in Montreal, Canada, where he died and was buried in 1960.
140. IOAN HUDCIC, son of Grigorie and Iuliana Hudcic, born 5 Dec. 1912 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Ioan was born at house no. 921, and the midwife at his birth was Eleana Lougsci of Tereblecea. Ioan was baptised by his mother the same day he was born, presumably because he was born with congenital problems and not likely to survive. Father Dimitrie Georgescu subsequently recorded his baptism in the church register. Ioan's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Grigorie al lui Ioachim Hudcic, lucrator din Tereblecea" and "Iuliana fiica lui Ioan Olar si a sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Bodor din Tereblecea."
141. TOADER HUDCIC, son of Grigorie and Iuliana Hudcic, born 14 Nov. 1913 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Toader was born at house no. 921, and the midwife at his birth was Eleana Lougoci of Vascauti-on-Siret. Toader was baptised by Father Ioan Tipa, and his godfather was Toma Cosic, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Toader's baptismal record identifies his parents as "Grigorie Hudcic, fiul lui Ioachim Hudcic si al sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Slemco, lucrator din Tereblecea" and "Iuliana fiica lui Ioan Olar si a sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Bodor din Tereblecea."
142. AURORA HUDCIC, daughter of Grigorie and Iuliana Hudcic, born 12 Aug. 1916 in Tereblecea, Bucovina, Austria-Hungary. Aurora was born at house no. 921, and the midwife at her birth was Eleana Lougoci of Tereblecea. Aurora was baptised by Father Ioan Tipa, and her godfather was Leon, son of Serghie Panciuc, peasant farmer of Tereblecea. Aurora's baptismal record identifies her parents as "Grigorie Hudcic fiul lui Ioachim Hudcic si al sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Slemco, agricultor din Tereblecea" and "Iuliana fiica lui Ioan Olar si a sotiei sale Domnica nascuta Bodor din Tereblecea."
143. LAZAR ZEHANCIUC ("Lazer Chiganchuk"), son of Vasilie and Eugenia Zehanciuc, born in Garbauti, Romania, now called Horbivtsi, Ukraine. Lazar's children still live there today (2020). He is known to have had two daughters.
-- MARIA CHIGANCHUK, born in Horbivtsi, Ukraine.
-- EVGENIA CHIGANCHUK, born in Horbivtsi, Ukraine.
144. IOAN ZEHANCIUC ("Ivan Chiganchuk"), son of Vasilie and Eugenia Zehanciuc, born in Garbauti, Romania.
145. PETRE ZEHANCIUC ("Petro Chiganchuk"), son of Vasilie and Eugenia Zehanciuc, born in Garbauti, Romania.
146. MIRCEA ZEHANCIUC ("Mircha Chiganchuk"), son of Vasilie and Eugenia Zehanciuc, born in Garbauti, Romania.
147. VASILIE ZEHANCIUC ("Vasilii Chiganchuk"), son of Vasilie and Eugenia Zehanciuc, born 1938 in Garbauti, Romania, died 15 Oct. 2019 in Israel. Vasilie's parents died of starvation circa 1940-42 as a result of the extreme hardships and famine that the Russian Communists had imposed on Northern Bucovina, which the Communists had stolen from Romania. Vasilie, being a little child at the time, was placed in an orphanage because his family couldn't take care of him, but after a while Vasilie fled the orphanage and made his way back to Horbivtsi, where he lived with one of his older brothers. Life for them was very hard and often there was not enough to eat. Vasilie lived in Horbivtsi until 1961, when he moved to Kazakhstan in Central Asia, losing contact with his brothers and kin. Before leaving Horbivsti, Vasilie had been courting a woman named (NN) LACUSTA, but he left without knowing that Miss Lacusta was pregnant with his child -- a son whom she named Mircea (Mircha), of whose existence Vasilie never knew. In Kazakhstan, Vasilie married a woman named KLAVDIA APPELBAUM. Vasilii and Klavdia had two daughters, Ludmila and Tatyana. Vasilii and Klavdia later moved to Israel, where Vasilii lived until his death. This account of Vasilii's life is drawn from information provided by his family, chiefly his grandson Eduard "Edi" Kuzmitsky, who initially contacted me on 26 Dec. 2018 when a 23andMe DNA test showed that he and my father were distant cousins. A rapid series of 23andMe messages then ensued that day in which Edi and I shared genealogical information and family history to identify where our genealogical connection was. In one of those 23andMe messages, Edi provided the following account of his grandfather Vasilii Chiganchuk (Vasilie Zehanciuc/Tehanciuc):
"What I know is my grandfather, who is named also Vasili, was the youngest out of 6 (I believe) brothers. His parents Evgenia and Vasili died when he was 2 years old due to hunger, and as I understand due to the hard times and the fact that my grandfather was the youngest, they wouldn't give him his share [of food] . . . . Basically he kind of lost contact with all his brothers. I think he had contact with one of his brothers up until 40 years ago. [sic - Edi later clarified that Vasilii's brothers lost contact with him, tried to find him and thinking he had died.] My grandfather moved to Kazakhstan, met my grandmother . . . . They had 2 kids, my mother and my aunt."
The following day, Edi provided this additional information on his grandfather Vasilii via Facebook Messenger:
"There was an orphanage, a Romanian one, in which someone put my grandfather, but he escaped after a few days due to other kids were cruel to him. He went back to the village, the one that he was born in (Horbivtsi), and he lived there until 1961. In the village he lived with different people, . . . ."
More recently, on 16 Aug. 2020 Edi explained how a MyHeritageDNA match revealed the existence of a son of Vasilii named Mircha, whom Vasilii never knew about:
"My DNA is on the MyHeritage website, and I had a match very high with a guy by the name of Mircha Orlov: 7.5% DNA. So, because he shared 1% with you and me, I understood it's from my [maternal] grandfather's side. So I told him my grandfather's name was Vasili Chiganchuk -- his father was named Vasili as well. And my grandfather had 5 brothers by name. So he said, 'My grandfather's name is also Vasili Chiganchuk and he had the same brother's names. Very, very strange . . . . So I spoke to his father (on Skype) and he shares a picture with me and tells Me, 'That's my father.' I send it to my grandmother and she tells me, 'That's your grandfather.' So I ask my grandmother is it possible he had another child. She says, 'No, because he left young.' So I speak to the guy again. I ask, 'How long were your parents together?' He says, 'Very, very short time, as he left very young and never knew he had a son.' And my grandfather left -- he never came back! And now I spoke to my grandfather's nieces (the elder ones) and they said, 'Yes, Vasili had a son. But he never came back. But everybody knew it was his son, and the brothers of my grandfather tried to find him and never could. So, to make the story short: my mom discovered she has a new brother. The resemblance between him and my grandfather is crazy -- the body language and voice and facial similarities, unbelievable. My grandfather passed away 10 month ago, so he never discovered he had a son. So, yeah, that's our little crazy story."
The children of Vasilie Zehanciuc (Vasilii Chiganchuk) are:

Toader Scripcari was born 10 Feb. 1926 in Tereblecea, died 11 April 1992 in Tereblecea, where he was also buried. He and his parents Nicolai and Anna, along with his two brothers, were arrested by the Communists in 1941 and deported to a slave labor camp in Kazakhstan, but they all survived the ordeal and were able to return to Tereblecea. God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not meant to be,
So He put His arms around you,
And whispered, "Come to me."
With tearful eyes we watched you,
As we saw you pass away.
Although we loved you deeply,
We could not make you stay.
Your golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hand at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
