Owen

of Montgomeryshire and Shropshire

Much of the genealogical information in this file
is taken from the "Pedigree of Owen of Llunllo and Bettws (Co. Montgomery), Tedsmore, Woodhouse, Condover and Whiteley
[now Kynaston of Hardwick] (Co. Salop)... compiled by Geo. Grazebrook FSA
... privately printed [in] London [by]
Mitchell and Hughes, 140 Wardour Street, W. 1887."

Grazebrook himself depended for most of his material, up to the time of King James I, on the Visitation of Shropshire (1623), the records of which he had himself edited for publication by the Society of Antiquaries.

For the generations after 1620, Grazebrook apparently relied on family records still in the keeping of descendants, particularly at Whiteley and Hardwick in Shropshire.

Before his death, he deposited in the library of the Society of Genealogists, London, two valuable manuscripts: his personal copy of the Pedigree, interleaved with lined sheets on which he made many subsequent notes and additions, and a very large leather-bound volume filled with family trees of Grazebrooks, Owens, and many families they had intermarried with, together with a great number of coats of arms, the whole thing written and illuminated in his own hand and illustrated, from time to time, with photographs and other mementoes of members of the family he had known. These books can still be inspected at the Society's premises at:
14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road,
London EC1M 7BA.

Grazebrook's Pedigree covers some 36 or 37 generations, from the 8th to the 19th centuries, and three more generations have followed since his time. I have therefore split the family tree into manageable portions, as follows:

1. Royal Tribes and Uchelwyr, 1030-1536
2. Crossing the Border 1536-1650
3. A Family in Decline? 1650-1750
4. The Owens in Ireland, 1750-1850
5. The 19th century and after

Inevitably, there will be some overlap between sections of the tree. The last-named person in each file is always the first-named in the next file, and most of his / her details will be found in the latter. Persons about whom there is something to say have their own individual hot links.
