The idea behind the 'Human Chain'
is a simple but brilliant one -
everyone gets to stand in a line along the outline of the demolished Abbey of
Waltham, and hold hands. It will take less than an hour, and the experience
has proved to be magical for everyone who took part in previous years.
This year, we are combining the
event with Holy Cross Day, a procession through town to commemorate the bringing
of the Holy Cross to Waltham by Tovi in the early 11th century, accompanied by
66 Saxons who settled here. The procession will begin with a symbolic crossing
of the Old River Lea in the Cornmill car park at 10.30 am, then make its way to
the Abbey Gardens, where it will form the Human Chain.
You will be amazed as the vast size of the
demolished Abbey is revealed - it rivalled Westminster Abbey in scale. This will
be a morning you will never forget.
This event is completely free, and suitable for anyone
of any ability to take part - prams and mobility scooters welcome! No booking required - just turn up at
10.30am in the Cornmill car park, or at 11.00 am in the Abbey Gardens.
