2016 is a hugely important year for us in Waltham Abbey. It’s the 950th Anniversary of all the important King Harold dates:

6th January 1066: Earl Harold Godwinson was crowned King of England.

25th September 1066: Harold was victorious at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

14th October 1066: Harold's reign was cut short at the Battle of Hastings.

Local organisations have set up the KH 950 Partnership together, to commemorate the life, reign, and honourable death of King Harold at several events throughout the year in Waltham Abbey. Members of the KH 950 Partnership are

Waltham Abbey Parish Church

Epping Forest District Museum

Waltham Abbey Town Council

the King Harold Day Society

and Waltham Abbey Historical Society.

The first event of our KH 950 celebrations at Waltham Abbey is on Wednesday 6th January 2016, when we shall mark King Harold’s coronation with a service of Compline in the Abbey Church at 5.00 pm. All are welcome at this service, especially those who are interested in King Harold II, in his great monastic foundation at Waltham, and in the story of the last Anglo Saxon King of England. Further details can be seen here:

News of the other KH 950 celebrations will be posted here as they are released.
