Thos. PALETHORPE, clerk to Mr. LONGSTAFF, solicitor, was summoned to show cause why he should not contribute to the maintenance of the illegitimate child of Sarah GODDARD, a young woman between 16 and 17 years of age. Mr. ANDREW appeared for the female, and Mr. TOYNBEE for Palethorpe. After the examination of several witnesses, the case was adjourned to the 17th.

John MARSHALL acknowledged the paternity of the child of Eliz. LUMLEY, of Somerby, and the same sum was fixed upon him.

An order was made upon Jas. PINDARD, of Boston, plumber, for payment of 2s 6d a week and costs towards the maintenance of a bastard child belonging to Barnett SMITH......The case occupied the court for a considerable time, and involved a nice point, the woman having been married, and it was unknown whether her husband was living or dead. [A witness claimed he had seen the husband in Grimsby more than a year ago, and at the last Boston fair, but BS swore she hadn't seen him for two years & she had been informed he was killed on the railway near Syston] etc.

The amount was laid low, (though Freeston was an old married man), in consequence of the female's having had three children previously.
John ASHWELL, landlord of the Crown and Cushion, Grantham, was ordered by the Mayor and Robt. TURNER Esq., on Monday last, to pay 2s per week towards the maintenance of the illegitimate child of Eliza LOCKE. Defendant is married.

Grantham County Petty Sessions 1 June
Chas. WILKINSON was brought up, accused by Mary WILSON, of Marston, with not obeying an order in bastardy for 2s 6d per week towards the maintenance of her illegitimate child: defendant had absconded, and was £1 5s in arrears. The overseer said WILKINSON was then in very impoverished circumstances, through want of employment: he had offered the complainant £1 which had been declined unless the whole was paid. The Magistrates thought the order a heavy one, and advised the parties to arrange as well as they could, and not incur any expenses in litigation.
Hy. BIRCH, of Little Dalby, acknowledged the paternity of the illegitimate child of Betsy MALTBY, of Bitchfield, and was ordered to contribute 1s 3d per week and to pay £1 5s expenses.

Lucy DODSON applied for an order of affiliation on Josh. TASKER. The cross-examination of the applicant elicited disgusting particulars, and she was reprimanded and sent away, the Magistrates refusing to allow her to affiliate. The evidence is not fit for publication.

Alford Petty Sessions 18 December
Salomi JOHNSON, singlewoman, of Sloothby, applied for an order for the maintenance of her bastard child on Thos. WILLIAMSON, wheelwright, of Toynton. The case attracted considerable attention from its having been previously heard and dismissed: shortly afterwards the applicant availed herself of the privilege of Lord Denman's decision, by which the mother of the child may, after any number of hearings, obtain fresh summonses against the reputed father, provided she brings forward fresh evidence. Mr. ROBINSON, of Alford, attended on behalf of the applicant, and Mr. INGOLDBY, of Louth, on the part of the defendant. After a lengthened investigation, an order was made on Williamson for the payment of 2s per week and £2 expenses; payment to commence from the date of last application.

Jos. HEWSON, labourer, of Beelsby, was summoned at the instance of Sarah CROSS, of Laceby, singlewoman, charged with being the father of her bastard child: ordered to pay 1s 9d per week and costs.
Gainsborough Petty Sessions 20 December
Harriet TEFT, singlewoman, applied for an order on Wm. GLEADALL of Gainsboro' to support a bastard child: order made for 2s. per week, and costs.
Louth Petty Sessions 18 December
Fred WILKES, fate [sic. Should be late?] valet to Lord Frederick BEAUCLERK, of Little Grimsby, but now a waiter at the George the Fourth inn in Nottingham, was charged by a girl 16 years old with being the father of her bastard child. Applicant being sworn, said that in the beginning of February last, the defendant was living in the service of Lord Fred. Beauclerk, at Little Grimsby; that she lived as a servant with Mr. GILBERT, a farmer of that place, and one of his Lordship's tenants; that defendant came to her master's house, when all were absent but herself, and attempted to violate her person, but from the resistance she made he did not succeed, and went away, and that she informed her mistress on her return. That on the following day, the defendant came again to the house, during the absence of all but herself, and there forcibly threw her into a seat, and violated her person, notwithstanding her struggles to prevent him, and that the child now produced before the bench was the result of that violation. She also said that she informed her master and mistress on their return home, and that her master went to defendant on the following morning, and that he (the defendant) came to the house and there beat and kicked her. Mr. Gilbert, complainant's master, was called in corroboration of her statement, and gave her an excellent character for prudence and modesty. Benj. ADLARD, constable, and Charlotte KEMP, mother of the complainant were called in corroboration of her statement......... Ordered to pay 2s 6d per week for the maintenance of the child, 5s per week for four weeks during the month's confinement, 10s the midwife, and £5 3s costs.
Boston Petty Sessions 21 December
An order was made upon Jas MARSHALL, of Algarkirk, servant, for payment of 1s 6d a week and costs towards the maintenance of a bastard child belonging to Eliz. NEALE, singlewoman.
An order was also made upon Christ. MUSCHAMP, of Wisbech, brazier, for payment of 2s 6d a week and costs towards the maintenance of an illegitimate child belonging to Eliz. GRAY........ etc.
