From the Spalding Guardian of 28 October 2004. This refers to the GOODFELLOWS School of Spalding Common. A little snippet is that it was opened in 1870 with the assistance of the Rev. Edward MOORE. His name crops up over many years being Perpetual Curate of Whaplode Drove in 1839, then he is noted at Weston, and finally taking the Spalding incumbency over from his father. He was by some more contempory memories than mine (Spalding History, Gooch, 1940) a bit of a tearaway in his youth (which is maybe why he was sent out to Whaplode Drove) but settled down to make an impact on Spalding Church, including initiating some much needed repairs to the building. Gooch also conveniently includes the MOORE family tree and also the JOHNSON one (the family which included Maurice) In the course of my transcriptions of the Whaplode Drove Registers, I have noted the following stray marriage:- "Edward MOORE B.A. Perpetual Curate of this hamlet and Elizabeth Sarah HOPKINSON of Spalding in this county were married at St James Church, Westminster Oct 11 1838" I suspect that this entry might have bent the rules, but it was in a Register which had just been replaced a year earlier (they were to run side by side for a few years!) Another slight bending of the rules which I have come across is that the Rev. MOORE acted as a witness to the marriage of my GG Grandparents, Eason BEAGLES and Sarah WOOLLEY on 3 October 1844, signing simply E J MOORE. I don't think that this was allowed.
