Southorpe

Description and Travel

Southorpe is a parish and hamlet about 150 miles north of London, 7 miles north-east of Gainsborough, 2 miles south-west of Northorpe and 2 miles east of Bylton. Grayingham parish lies to the east and Corringham parish to the south. A small parish in area, it covers only about 467 acres. Southorpe parish was once an extra-parochial portion of Northorpe parish.

The hamlet of Southorpe has virtually disappeared. The only thing at Southorpe now is the boarding kennels which are in the old railway crossing house. If you are planning a visit:

• By automobile, take the A159 trunk road north-east out of Gainsborough and turn east onto the B1205 arterial. Follow that for about 2.5 miles and you will be in the heart of the parish.

Politics and Governance

• The formerly extra-parochial parish was made into a civil parish some time between 1842 and 1872.
  
  
• The parish was in the ancient Corringham Wapentake in the West Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey.
  
  
• In April, 1936, this parish was abolished and the land amalgamated into Northorpe Civil Parish.
  
  
• Today's district governance is provided by the West Lindsey District Council.

Poorhouses, Poor Law, etc.

• As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, this parish became a part of the Gainsborough Poorlaw Union.
