Historic Hotels, Inns and Pubs of Helpringham

Introduction

Hotels, Inns and Pubs often provided rooms for travellers. They were often constructed:

• On coach routes, especially at cross roads and on heavily travelled "main" routes.
• Where railways were being built or at a railway terminus. These were often owned by the railway owner or an investor and may have held railway surveyors, supervisors, engineers, etc. Typically they did NOT hold the navvies or rail layers. Those men lived either in tents or other temporary shelters near their work places.
• Where canals were being opened or harbours were being improved. This could include building a seawall to hold back the ocean and the development of a place for people to spend holidays.
• Where a spa or bathhouse was being built or developed.

The value to the family historian occurs when you can find someone from your family who is "missing" from home in the census, or who has been hired from their parish to work as a maid or server in such an establishment. You will find some people worked for years at one place, only to be "promoted" by moving to another such establishment.

The Nag's Head Public House

The Sun Inn.

The Sun Inn apparently opened before 1842. The Inn was destroyed by an enemy bombing raid in the 1940s. Here are the names associated with the Inn in different years:
