Hawerby cum Beesby (Hawardby)

- The Anglican parish church is dedicated to Saint Margaret.
- The church was repaired in 1846.
- The church seats only 60 persons.
- The church was declared redundant by the Diocese of Lincoln in October, 1974. It was used as a monument and art gallery in July, 1978.
- Richard CROFT has a photograph of St. Margaret's church on Geo-graph, taken in September, 2007.
- Parishioners now attend services at All Saints Church in Wold Newton.
- The Anglican parish register dates from 1520, but is only clearly legible from 1597.
- The Lincolnshire Archives have the parish register deposited showing baptisms 1596*1706, marriages 1597*1704, and burials 1597-1699. There is a gap, then more recent registers are available. The Archive has a fairly rich trove of parish documents.

This village and small parish are in the Lincolnshire Wolds about 9 miles south of Grimsby. Wold Newton parish lies just to the west. The parish covers about 1,200 acres and includes the hamlet and manor of Beesby.
If you are planning a visit:
- Hawerby Hall is a brick building. It was erected in 1781 and enlarged in 1840.
- Hawerby Hall was the residence and property of Theophilus John HARNEIS, JP and lord of the manor in 1900.
- This note was provided by Sheila Coy in April 2002: Hawerby Hall is on the A18 just near North Thoresby. In recent years it was run as a small hotel for women called the hen-house and was for a time pink. It is now white again and either for sale or recently sold.
- Nicola Pike adds this comment: It was a plague village and has a lot of superstition around the Hall.

- Second Lieutenant Frank Douglas SOWERBY of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars (Lancashire Fusiliers), age 29, was killed on the 8th of January, 1916 and is buried at Abbeville cemetery in France. His parents were Francis and Maud Elizabeth SOWERBY of Hawerby Hall.
- There is also this entry from the parish records in the Archives: 1st Norfolks: Lieut E L WEST was killed in action on July 31st while bravely leading his men. Was a gallant officer, and much liked by both Officers and men, who greatly regret him. News of the sad event came to Mrs West while she was staying at Hawerby Hall, Aug 5th. He leaves a little daughter. Lieut West came all the way from Canada to do his bit.
- The Lieut E L WEST, listed above, was actually a Captain, Edward Lynn WEST, of the Norfolk Rgt., 1st Btn., who died 1-Aug-1916 and was intured at Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of George and Margaret WEST, and the husband of Margaret WEST in Victoria, BC, Canada.
- This place was an ancient parish in Lincolnshire and became a modern Civil Parish when those were established.
- The parish of Beesby was incorporated with Hawerby parish in 1450.
- The parish was in the ancient Bradley Haverstoe Wapentake in the Central Lindsey district in the parts of Lindsey.
- District governance is provided by the North-East Lincolnshire Council.
