Aveland and Ness Deanery

Aveland is likely from the Old English Awell+land, meaning "land of springs and rivers". Ness is a Viking term for a headland or "neck" of land. The Ness Wapentake (which is a separate entity from the Deanery) covered the southern "neck" of Lincolnshire. In the 19th century, the Aveland and Ness Deanery, centered around Market Deeping, consisted of the following parishes in the south of Lincolnshire:
