Here you will find transcripts of the 1891 Census Enumerators Sheets for the County of Middlesex. They are presented pending the completion of a searchable database as part of the FreeCen Project which aims to bring all census returns for England Wales and Scotland on to the Internet without charge. At present only a selection of districts are covered; this will be added to as new districts are completed.

A worldwide team of volunteers is responsible for completing this task. Each piece has been transcribed, checked and validated to ensure the greatest possible standard of accuracy. You are advised however to check facsimiles of the original sheets yourselves as errors are still possible and handwriting is often open to interpretation.

High Street, Uxbridge The transcripts appearing here are those found within the old County of Middlesex, however they will not include those areas of Middlesex transferred to the County of London now forming part of Central London. Middlesex no longer exists as a county but the postal address remains, and, with some exceptions, it is these districts that may be found here.

The census was taken on the night of the 5th April 1891. Each household was required to inform an enumerator of the people resident that night. The enumerator then completed a return and it these returns that have been transcribed. It is therefore quite possible for misunderstandings to appear on the forms resulting in inaccuracies. The principle adopted by FreeCen is to transcribe as written, but in areas of doubt or where we believe details may be incorrect are marked "??" by the entry.

The official reference for the 1891 Census is RG 12. Within this are "Pieces" each covering a locality, for example RG 12/1018 covers part of Hillingdon. Completion of each new "Piece" is awaited before adding to the site. Within each Piece are a number of Enumeration Districts. You will find surname indexes to each Enumeration District at the beginning of each Piece. If a name you are looking for is shown in the index use of the "Find" tool in Internet Explorer or other browsers will locate the entry.

Special thanks are due to Bob Hewett in New Zealand, who initiated the MDX 1891 project for FreeCEN in mid-2001 and coordinated all work up to May 2003, and especially to the world-wide team of volunteers (as credited against individual Pieces) and Joy Higgs and other members of the Hillingdon Family History Society who provided a final check on many of the Pieces before publication.
