ANDREW, pilots, of St. Mawes; she was named "The Andrews," and went off in beautiful style. At one period the pilots were restricted to have their cutters not exceeding 40 tons, but this restriction has been removed. The "Andrews" is a beautiful vessel, and reflects much credit on the builder. Mr. Trethowan, of Little Falmouth, has also a pilot cutter nearly ready for launching, for Messrs. BERRYMAN | Mr. | 16-Sep | 1859 | Fire | St Just in Roseland | A fire was discovered on the premises of Mr. BERRYMAN, at Gazza, St. Just in Roseland, on Friday evening last, which destroyed three ricks - corn, hay, and furze - there being but little water at hand to extinguish or check the flames. The proprietor, who is a young man, has not long entered on this farm, and the produce destroyed is the first fruit of his labour. The fire is believed to be the work of an incendiary; and a person is suspected. | West Briton 23rd Sept 1859 |
BERRYMAN | Mr. | 16-Sep | 1859 | Fire | St Just in Roseland | DISTRESSING CASE OF FIRE - We stated last week that a fire, supposed to have been the act of an incendiary, took place on the farm of Roecarrow, in the parish of St. Just in Roseland, on Friday, the 16th instant. We should add that the circumstances of the case are most distressing, as the occupier, Mr. BERRYMAN, had only held the estate for a twelvemonth, and having most successfully saved all his corn and ha, and safely placed it in the mowhay, in the space of a few hours he found himself deprived of the whole produce of his industry, without a grain of corn to carry to the market, without provision for his cattle during the winter, without a load of straw for bedding or manure. Taking these things into account, together with the expense of tillage and labour in saving, his loss cannot be estimated at less than GBP300. He has lost two stacks of wheat, the produce of fourteen acres, one of barley, the produce of twelve acres, one of oats, the produce of six acres, and! one of hay, the produce of six acres. It is the more difficult to account for the motive of the incendiary, as Mr. Berryman is a most inoffensive, industrious young man, and, as a proof of this, has met with the sincerest sympathy from his fellow farmers, not only in his own parish, but wherever the sad account of his loss has reached. The case has been warmly taken up, and we trust a sufficient sum will be raised to enable him to go on with his farm, which he could not do without this assistance. A handsome reward has been offered for the detection of the incendiary, which it is hoped will have the desired effect. Subscriptions are earnestly solicited, and will be thankfully received by the Rev. C. W. CARLYON, rector of the parish. | West Briton 30th Sept 1859 |

FURSE | - | 05-Feb | 1856 | Fire | St Just in Roseland | FIRE IN ROSELAND - On the evening of the 5th instant, about ten o'clock, a stack of corn standing in a small farm yard, belonging to a farmer called FURSE, in the parish of St Just, (east) about a mile from St. Mawes, was discovered to be on fire. Being on the top of the very high ground which forms the south coast of the harbour, and the night being clear, it formed a bright and brilliant spectacle, over a very extensive area of country, and its splendour, being necessarily accompanied with a certain portion of terror, said to be necessary to constitute the sublime, the formidable element exerted its prerogative, unrestrained, and illumined the firmament for some time. Few persons being near the spot at the time, and water being scarce at that elevation, the whole of the stack, which was not very large, was entirely consumed. It is painful to add, that little or no doubt can be entertained of this mischief being occasioned by some diabolical incendiary. | West Briton 15th Feb 1856 |

GEORGE | M | 05-Dec | 1850 | Accident | St Just | DREADFUL ACCIDENT. - On Thursday last, when Master M. George, a little boy about 10 years old, son of Mrs. George, of Gearvean, in St. Just (Roseland), was in the act of throwing down a bundle of straw from a stack, he accidently fell on a long rough pole put as a prop to the rick, and, distressing to relate, the end of the pole entered his groin at the bottom of his abdomen. In this fearful position he fell backwards a distance of 12 or 14 feet, when his cries were heard by some men who were at work near the spot, who ran to the poor little fellow’s assistance, and soon released him from his dreadful position by pulling out the end of the pole from his flank to the almost incredible length of nine inches. Mr Boyne, surgeon of St. Mawes, was soon in attendance; the boy is going on well, and hopes are entertained that the dreadful wound will not prove fatal. | Royal Cornwall Gazette 13th Dec 1850 |

GERMAN | William | 22-Mar | 1854 | Inquest | St Mawes | On Wednesday, at St. Mawes, on the body of William GERMAN, of that place, aged 22 years. The deceased had been employed as a boatman in the Coast Guard service, stationed at St. Mawes for about six weeks. On Monday afternoon last, when off (.....?) Point, in the "Alarm," revenue cruiser, he was (on?) the platform gangway throwing the lead to ascertain the depth of water. After he had drawn in his line and was coming down from thence the wind took the mainsail on the port side, and caused the boat to jibe. The mainsail struck deceased and knocked him overboard. Every exertion was made to save him, but he sank before assistance could reach him, and was not seen to rise again. The body was crept up near the same spot the following afternoon. Verdict, "accidentally drowned." | West Briton 24th Mar 1854 |

HASWELL MURPHY WHISTON | Lieut. Cardigan - | 02-Aug | 1852 | Petty Sessions | Veryan | RIGHT OF CUSTOM-HOUSE OFFICERS TO SEARCH THE PERSON - At the Petty Sessions held at Veryan on Monday last, CARDIGAN MURPHY, a coast guard man on the St. Mawes station, was brought before the bench for having gone into a public-house in St. Just, and meeting a person called WHISTON, and proceeding to search him for smuggled goods; but, finding nothing contraband about him, he left the house. Shortly afterwards, Whiston quitted, but had not walked many yards, when he again met Murphy, who stopped him and went on to search him a second time, but again finding nothing on him, left him. Whiston, the following day, obtained a summons, and the case coming before the magistrates, the ultra-officious coast guard man was fined 50s. and the costs [under a new Act], which provides that any person in the employment of the customs, attempting to search any one personally, without having reasonable ground of suspicion, shall be liable to a fine of GBP 10. The magistrates humanely mitigated the penalty, as it was the first case under this Act of Parliament which had come before them. LIEUT. HASWELL, of the St. Mawes station, was present at the examination, and endeavoured to repudiate the character of the prosecutor, but this was overruled by the bench, the letter of the act being clear. We think it due to the character of the coast guard men, however, as a body, to bear testimony to their general orderly and decent deportment towards the inhabitants at their respective stations. Their demeanour is mostly very correct, and their assistance often very useful to the community. | West Briton 6th Aug 1852 |

LANGLAND | Alexander | 26-Dec | 1856 | Inquest | St Mawes | The following inquests
have been held by Mr. CARLYON county coroner: On Friday, the 26th ult., at St. Mawes, on the body of Alexander LANGLAND, aged 30 years. The deceased was a gunner and driver in the Royal Artillery stationed at St. Mawes castle and from the evidence of John WOODWARD, a bombardier of the same service, who had charge of the men at the castle, it appeared that the deceased and another man called Richard CAIRNES were not present at the tattoo at half-past eight on Wednesday evening; but about half-past eleven he was sitting in his quarters and heard a noise outside; and on going out he saw gunner Cairnes on the drawbridge, looking over it. Witness asked what he was doing there; he replied that he came over the wall and he thought the deceased had fallen into the ditch. Witness looked into the ditch and saw something lying on the ground; deceased's jacket was open and he saw the breast of his shirt. Witness immediately unlocked the door leading to the ditch, and raised the deceased to a sitting posture, and left him with Cairnes until he got further assistance; he was cold and speechless. As soon as assistance arrived he was carried into the castle and laid on the first bed. Mr. HARDING, surgeon, was sent for from St. Mawes, and attended him; but he died from the injuries he had received between three and four o’clock on the following morning. Richard CAIRNES, gunner R.A., deposed that he and the deceased left the castle on Wednesday evening between six and seven o'clock and remained at St. Mawes till eleven; they then returned to the castle; deceased was the worse for liquor but was able to walk without assistance, and they had both drank alike. On arriving at the castle, witness got over the wall near the castle ditch, and deceased attempted to follow him; he saw him on the top of the wall and saw him fall from thence into the ditch, a depth of about twenty-seven feet. It appeared that the deceased before he died recovered sufficiently to be able to tell those who were near him that he had fallen in the way described, and he hoped it would be a warning to others. Verdict, accidental death. The jury at the same time expressed a hope that some steps would be taken to confine the men to the castle after hours, so as to prevent the recurrence of such an accident. | West Briton 2nd Jan 1857 |

PUCKLE | E. (Rev) | Dec | 1850 | Emigration | Canterbury NZ | THE CANTERBURY SETTLEMENT - The four vessels that
sailed In September last for this new establishment arrived safe at their
destination, and it is somewhat singular that three out of the four reached
their port, within twelve hours of each other, on the 16th of December. The
fourth, the "CRESSY," was eleven days after the others. They had a most
prosperous voyage. The REV. E . PUCKLE sailed in the "RANDOLPH," and the
passengers and crew of that vessel sent a deputation, unknown to Mr. Puckle,
to wait on the REV. DR. SELWYN, the Bishop of New Zealand, to express their
great affection for, and admiration of, the reverend gentleman's Zeal and
christianlike demeanour to the whole of the numerous ship's company, that he
had preserved harmony and peace throughout the voyage, and promoted the
comfort and happiness of all. The Bishop in reply said he was delighted to receive this testimony to Mr. Puckle's merits, he had heard of the unity that had prevailed on board of the "Randolph," and he was highly pleased that the reverend gentleman had been able to carry out, his, the bishop's, views, stated in one of his lordship's letters to England, and the "he had so knit all hearts as to have brought his flock with him." The bishop subsequently gave Mr. Puckle a most cordial and flattering reception, and we have no doubt that he will prove one of the most efficient and useful persons in the construction of this new colony. The circumstances which led to Mr. Puckle's removal from St. Mawes, have thus, as we are glad to learn, indirectly contributed to his own benefit, and to the general advantage of an interesting community. | West Briton 13th Jun 1851 |

STEP | Horatio | 11-Jan | 1856 | Assault | St Mawes | ASSAULT BY DRUNKEN SOLDIERS Two of the soldiers belonging to the Militia, a party of whom are stationed at St. Mawes Castle, have been charged before the magistrates with being drunk and assaulting HORATIO STEP, a constable in the execution of his duty, by striking him with one of their belts, and threatening to murder him. The picket was obliged to be called out, and we are sorry to record, that it appeared from the evidence of Mr. Step, that this brought rather an accumulation of his enemies than a reinforcement to add to the security of his position, and after volleys of oaths, imprecations and menaces, he returned in safety to his home. Great credit is due to this intelligent and intrepid officer, for his public spirit on this occasion, and his activity and determination in vindicating the law by bringing the offenders before the court. One of the parties was fined ten shillings, and the other five shillings, with the costs in both cases, and a notice from the bench, that any future similar cases would be visited by much heavier penalties. It is of the highest importance to society at large that constables, and all executors of the laws, should receive essential protection, for of what use is it for senates to make statutes to preserve property and life if they do not impart special safeguards to those, who, as Punch says, are the "finishers of the law." | West Briton 11th Jan 1856 |

The front wall was built partly of stone and partly of cob, and from the evidence of William Tregeagle it appeared that at the time of the unfortunate occurrence they were undermining a portion of it, about 16 feet long and between 9 and 10 feet high at each end. Witness when he had nearly got through his end gave the wall a blow, and observing it shake and inclined to fall, called the deceased to get out of the way, but he jumped from the board on which he was standing in a wrong direction, and in attempting to escape the wall fell on him and he was crushed underneath it.
