The making of Vanity Fair

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

An amazing afternoon. When I photographed Universal's camera, a security guard asked 'Are you with the crew?'
'Uh....... No' I replied so I was asked to go back behind the barriers.
Later a crowd of extras were going through the grounds of The Holbourne Museum.
I went in and a lady with microphone and walkie talkie asked me what I would like
'Can you give me some soldiers?' I asked
She smiled
'Soldiers, come here' she called and they posed in the museum grounds against a period background.
You should have seen the crowd scene - the ladies in their hats; cute kids in long
pavement-brushing dresses; even a couple walking a dog.
The film lady then went on to say 'You're not really supposed to be in here,
you better go back out on to the street'

I parked a mile out of town and walked in to see the Hollywood production filming of
Regency London / Bath - "Vanity Fair"
I'll never forget the director's assistant calling out
'Soldiers! .... Come here'

Returned for a second day to watch all the activity in Pulteney Street.
A great 'buzz' amongst the crowd of onlookers. There were many horse-drawn vehicles in the street.
Two lorry loads of cows also arrived for one street scene.
A 'smoke screen' of dry ice was used to hide the onlookers in long shots.
One lady in the crowd said her son was an 'extra' for the week. He was playing a dandy.
'Extras' get paid £60 a day; 300 were in action on Wednesday.
Originally the film was going to be made in Ireland but because of the commitments of the star,
Ms Reese Witherspoon, it was moved to Bath.
Next week they relocate to Hampton Court.
