St. Bartholomew's is built on the supposed site of a Roman burial ground and probably of a Saxon church, evidence of the latter may survive in a Dec niche on the east wall, a crude and much weathered stone crucifix. The existing building is basically Norman with later medieval additions. The three-stage Dec west tower has a slightly bulging octagonal broach spire. Inside the church the three-bay Late Norman arcade has piers with large scalloped capitals and double-stepped arches. The walls are scraped. The font is a fine Norman tub-shaped font with a double band of cable moulding beneath the rim. There is a needlework tapestry on the end wall depicting the original reredos and church in its setting. There is stained glass in the church by Clayton & Bell; and pleasant north aisle windows by Rodrich Friend in 1996 depicting flora and fauna. Ecclesiastical effigies can be seen in the church.

The Manor House, west of the church, is 17th Century, altered and enlarged in 1908 for Cyril Cunard by A.N. Prentice, then reinstated in 1936 after a fire by Hume & Erith. The lodge with gatepiers is dated 1910.
