Generation One

 

 

1.  Hans Heinrich¹ Schenkel  (Henry arrived 2 Sep 1750 on the "Ann" with his brothers, Jacob and Ulrich, also his mother, Elizabeth Guettinger, and his sister Elizabeth. Heinrich Schenkel was naturalized at Halifax on July 10, 1758 as Henry Shankle. He next appears marrying Carey Balsor (Gertraudt Baltzer) on April 10, 1766. Her family was originally from Lunenburg. They were married at Granville, Annapolis County, and by 1775 had four daughters. There is no record of a male heir, so that his line appears to end right there. He and his family moved to Quebec in 1783); baptized 1 May 1735 at Fehraltorf, Zurich, SWZ; m. Anna Catherine Gertraudt (Garey) Baltzer (Balsor), daughter of Heinrich Christoph Baltzer and Anna Maria Elizabeth Webber, 10 Apr 1766; d. at Quebec, Quebec, QC, CAN.

     He Henry was awarded Lot D-2, Back Range, North Suburbs of Halifax, probably as a result of having served in the militia. His brother was awarded Lot D-1, Back Range. This would not seem proper, since he was living with his      brother at the time, unless it were a grant for services rendered. He is shown on the victualling lists through 1755, but not in 1756. He is next listed as being naturalized in Halifax in July 1758. His next appearance in records is his marriage and birth of his first daughter, Elizabeth on 10 Apr 1766, listed in the Granville Township Register in      Annapolis County. The next record is for the purchase of 500 acres of land from a Crispus Shaw on 13 Jul 1774 for the sum of 13 pounds, 15 shillings. Property was listed      as Lot No.4, Granville Township. The next entry in records is his certification for having stood watch at Scotch Fort for a period of ten weeks. This was recorded in the Granville Township Register on 5 Jul 1777 The last record I could find for Henry, himself, was the sale of Granville      Township Lot No.4, Stoney Beach Marsh Lot No.17, Basin Lot No.29, totalling about 500 acres, on 28 Aug 1783, to George Cornwell of New York for the sum of 340 pounds.

Just last year, I learned that Henry and family left, intoto, for Quebec, where he settled and some of his children married. He was naturalized on 10 Jul 1758 at Halifax, Halifax, NS, CAN  (He was naturized under the name, Henry Shankle).
