Mailing Lists

The following is a table of mailing lists to which you can subscribe to help you in your research. You need to choose wisley the lists to which you subscribe since you could end up with many messages to review each day.

Here are some guidlines:

Use the "Subject" field. Leaving the subject field blank will result in many listers to delete your message without reading it since they are very busy and rely on the subject field to know what you are communicating. Also, don't use general terms shch as "Searching" or "My family". Try to put as much of your actual message in the subjuct area as possible such as "Descendents of John PAYNE".
Stay on topic. If you are on a Genealogy list, don't get off on a tangent about German Cooking or Christmas in Germany. There are lists for these topics, some of which will be given below. There is a special case of getting off topic, which is flaming. If you think someone is rude or you otherwise are offended by them, don't think up smart comebacks and put them out on the list so that every other list member has to hear your dissaproval. Keep in mind that even if you send a message that the message they wrote is off topic, you are off topic yourself.
Unsubscribe appropriately. Mialing lists have an e-mail address which is used to communicate with the other list members. Do not use this address to Unsubscribe. Subscribing and unsubscribing may be done by using the links given in the "Site Name" column. All you will do by using the regular e-mail address for the list is to send a message to all other members on the list saying "unscribe". This will not unsubscribe you and the other list members will have one more worthless message to delete.

NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN-L	A recent addition to the lists, to be used by anyone intrested in genealogy concerning NRW specifically and takes in the entire state (Land). Donna Pierce is list administrator. To see the collection of prior postings to the list, visit the Nordrhein-Westfalen-L Archives.
	Westfalen-L covers genealogy in former Prussian province of Westfalen + principality of Lippe-Detmold. Todays districts of Muenster, Arnsberg and Detmold. Westfalen-L soll das Gebiet der frueheren Provinz Westfalen und das Fuerstentum Lippe-Detmold abdecken, also die heutigen Regierungsbezirke Muenster, Arnsberg und Detmold. To post a message to all the list members, send email to [email protected]. To subscribe. click on the link to the left and fill out the form.
DEU-SAUERLAND-L	A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Sauerland area of Germany, especially the former "Herzogtum Westfalen". The preferred language for the list is German; however, postings in other languages will be accepted. You must be a subscriber to post to the list. To subscribe send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to [email protected] (mailmode) or [email protected] (digest mode). To post to both DEU-SAUERLAND-L and DEU-SAUERLAND-D, messages should be sent to [email protected]. Messages sent there will appear both places.
TRIER-ROOTS-L	A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in Luxembourg, the Saarland, the Rheinland, Westfalen (Westphalia), and the Pfalz (used to be between Rheinland and Baden, belonged to Bavaria but is now part of Rheinpfalz).
GERMAN-KINGDOMS-L	A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Duchies of Thuringen (Thuringia) including Reuss altere Linie, Reuss jungere Linie, Saxe-Altenburg (Sachsen-Altenburg), Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Sachsen-Koburg-Cotha), Saxe-Meiningen (Sachsen-Meiningen), Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach), Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, Anhalt, and Schaumberg-Lippe; Braunschweig (Brunswick); Lippe (aka: Lippe-Detmold); Waldeck; Mecklenburg-Schwerin; Mecklenburg-Strelitz; and the Kingdom of Saxony (Sachsen).
BUNDESLAND-L	A mailing list for those trying to find their German roots and interested in German history.
DEUTSCHLAND-L	A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in Germany and other German-speaking areas. The language for the list is strictly German.
GERMAN-LIFE-L	This is a list hosted by Glenn G. Geisheimer. It is designed for discussions on life in Germany through the ages. This information should help in understanding your ancestors life. Topics for discussion include, but are not limited to, local customs, naming patterns, migration, foods, clothing, weather, city and rural life, housing, professions, emigration, changing borders, books, religion, government, etc. The mailing list is not for personal genealogical posts or queries.
