     David and Phoebe came to Upper Harper District, Roane Co VA, in the
     1830's and like most of their neighbours were squatters on the Bruen
     land tract. They built their cabin in the woods at Red Knob and had a
     farm there. Late in their life this tract came to market, the settlers
     were told they would have to buy their farms or give them up to those
     who could. David bought their farm with money due to them from their
     family in Rockingham Co. They are buried in Shadydale Cem, Roane Co.
