How Do I Join The Study?

If you are interested in joining the study there are two things you should be aware of:

1) You must be a -Direct- GILL Descendent.

What does this mean? All men carry a "Y" chromosome, which we will be solely interested in for this testing. If you descend from a GILL and all generations between you and your GILL ancestor are males then you qualify for testing!

If at any point between your GILL ancestor and one of your direct ancestors is a female, you are not eligible for testing.

Why? All women carry ONLY "X" chromosomes so even though your Gill genes are passed on from the mother they are not passed on through the "Y" chromosome and therefore, for these testing purposes, do not qualify.

2) You must personally pay for your testing kit.

FamilyTreeDNA has given the Gill project a discounted price of $99.00 for a Y-DNA 12 marker test or $119.00 for a Y-DNA 37 marker test and $199 for the Y-DNA 67 marker test.

If you choose the 12 marker test, you can always add the additional markers at a later date.
