     John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, Marquess of Dorset was the eldest son of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford.2 He was born between 1371 and 1373.4,5 He was the son of John, "of Gaunt," Duke of Lancaster and Catherine de Roët L.G..3 John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, Marquess of Dorset was nominated into the Order of the Garter, #87, circa 1397.2 He was created Marquis of Dorset by his 1st cousin, King Richard II in 1397.6 Arms: England, bordure gobony argent and azure.7 Marquess of Dorset at England between 1397 and 16 March 1410.1,6 He was legitimized with the assent of Parliament on 9 February 1396/97.8 2nd Earl of Somerset between 10 February 1396 and 16 March 1410.3 He was created Earl of Somerset by his 1st cousin, King Richard II, with place in Parliament between the Earl Marshal and the Earl of Warwick on 10 February 1396/97.3 He married Margaret, Marchioness of Dorset, daughter of Thomas (de Holand), Earl of Kent, Lord Woodstock, Holand, and Wake and Lady Alice FitzAlan of Arundel, before 28 September 1397; Her 1st. 3rd cousins.1,9,10 John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, Marquess of Dorset was downgraded from the Marquessate, and thereafter known as Earl of Somerset, on 3 November 1399.2 He died on 16 March 1409/10 at the hospital of St. Katherine-by-the-Tower, London, England.11 He died on 21 April 1410.2 John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, Marquess of Dorset was buried in Canterbury Cathedral, Kent, England.5 John Beaufort, Earl of Somerset, Marquess of Dorset was buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, England. He was a distinguished soldier and a leader of the Lollard sect circa 1408.1 He married Joan de la Pole, Baroness Cobham, daughter of Sir John de la Pole Knt. and Joan de Cobham, on 18 July 1408; His 3rd. Her 4th.1,2,3 John, Lord Oldcastell was summoned to Parliament as a Baron between 26 October 1409 and 22 March 1414.1 He was tried and excommunicated for heresy in 1413.1 He was a witness where Thomas Brooke Knt., Lord Cobham escaped execution for heresy though he had adopted his father-in-law (step-father of Joan actually), John Oldham's Lollardism. John, Lord Oldcastell died on 25 December 1417. Having been adjudged a traitor to the king, was hanged.1,3
