Athenasius, Duke and Bishop of Naples was born circa 863. He was the son of Gregory III, Duke of Naples.2 Duke of Naples between 877 and 898.3 A letter of Pope John VIII is extant, in which he justifies Athanasius, Bishop of Naples, for having plucked out the eyes of Sergius, Duke of Naples, who favored the Saracens in despite of the papal anathemas. The meek and holy nature of this worthy successor of St. Peter may be judged by his ordering the Bishop of Naples to bring him the chief men among the Saracens in that city, and cutting their throats in the presence of his legate. Athenasius, Duke and Bishop of Naples was blinded and deposed by his brother before 900.1 He died circa 900.1

King of Ringerike Hálfdan Haleg Haraldsson was the son of Haraldr Hårfager Hálfdanarson, King of Norway and Snæfrid Svasesdottir.1 King of Ringerike Hálfdan Haleg Haraldsson was a witness where Torf-Einarr Rögnvaldsson, Orknøyjarl went up to Halfdan, and cut a spread eagle upon his back, by striking his sword through his back into his belly, dividing his ribs from the backbone down to his loins, and tearing out his lungs; and so Halfdan was killed.1 King of Ringerike Hálfdan Haleg Haraldsson was a witness where King of Ringerike Sigurdr Hrise Haraldsson initially cast out, with his brothers, by his father because of the bewitchment following his mother's death, but Thjodolf of Hvin, the Skald, interceded and pleaded for their sake, and Harald was reconciled with his sons, and Sigurd, and his brother Halfdan, were sent to Ringerike to rule.1 King of Ringerike Hálfdan Haleg Haraldsson came very unexpectedly to Orkney, and Earl Einar immediately fled; but came back soon after about harvest time, unnoticed by Halfdan.1 He was initially cast out, with his brothers, by his father because of the bewitchment following his mother's death, but Thjodolf of Hvin, the Skald, interceded and pleaded for their sake, and Harald was reconciled with his sons, and Halfdan, and his brother Sigurd, were sent to Ringerike to rule.1 He witnessed the death of Rögnvaldr Eysteinsson, Mørejarl in 894; He was killed by two jealous sons of Harlald Fairhair. Halfdan Haleg and Gudrod Ljome set off one spring with a great force, and came suddenly upon Earl Ragnvald, earl of More, and surrounded the house in which he was, and burnt him and sixty men in it.1 King of Ringerike Hálfdan Haleg Haraldsson died after 900. Halfdan Haleg captured in Orkney by Einar, son of Ragnvald of More, whom Halfdan and his brothers had killed. Thereafter Earl Einar went up to Halfdan, and cut a spread eagle upon his back, by striking his sword through his back into his belly, dividing his ribs from the backbone down to his loins, and tearing out his lungs; and so Halfdan was killed.

Einar then sang: --

"For Ragnvald's death my sword is red:
Of vengeance it cannot be said
That Einar's share is left unsped.
So now, brave boys, let's raise a mound, --
Heap stones and gravel on the ground
O'er Halfdan's corpse: this is the way
We Norsemen our scat duties pay."1

To the Europeans, the Magyr were savages, barely human in character, and interested only in rape and plunder. They were the abominable people of Gog and Magog, and their arrival meant the Day of Judgement was at hand. They were said to have an insatiable hunger for human flesh. At the same time, Arab traders noted them quite differently. "The Magyrs," one wrote, "are a race of Turks and their leader rides out with a force of 20,000 horseman. They have a plain that is all dry herbage and a wide territory... They have completely subjugated the Slavs, and they always order them to provide food for them and consider them slaves... These Magyrs are a handsome people and of good appearance, and their clothes are of silk brocade, and their weapons of silver encrusted with gold. They constantly plunder the Slavs." Two quite different views of the same people. Árpád, Herceg Magyar was the successor of Álmos Magyar; leader of the Magyar.3 Árpád, Herceg Magyar was born circa 859. He was the son of Álmos Magyar.2 Prince of the Magyar in 886. Árpád, Herceg Magyar was chosen by seven Magyar tribes to lead his people, the Magyr, from the Dnieper Steppes westward to conquer Hungary and Transylvania in 889.4 He was enlisted by the Emperor Arnulf to help him against his rebellious vassal, Sviatopluk, the King of Moravia, between 892 and 894 at the Pannonian Basin between the Danube and Tisza rivers.4 He returned to Pannonia to raid with his army in 894.4 He was crossed the Carpathians with the entire nation and their auxiliaries between 895 and 896 at winter.4 Prince of Hungary between 896 and 907.5 He took possession of the Alföld (where the Szekels submitted themselves voluntarily) and put an end to any resistance from Transylvania between 897 and 898.4 He saw Frankish rule vanish in 900 at Pannonia.4 He saw his own horde settled in the Dunántúl, between Székesfehérvár, on the site of which, or near it, he made his headquarters, and Buda circa 906.4 He completed the destruction of Moravian rule in the north-west in 906.4 He died circa 907.6 He annihilated a Bavarian army at Ennsburg, seeing Magyar rule extended up to the Avars' old frontier where the Enns runs into the Danube, in 907.4
