Prowers County was formed from Bent County in 1889. It was named for John Wesley Prowers, a cattleman and legislator from the lower Arkansas Valley region. Lamar is the county seat.


Prowers County is bordered by Kiowa County; Greeley County, Kansas; Hamilton County, Kansas; Stanton County, Kansas; Baca County; and Bent County.
