House and declared his Royal Highness George Prince of Wales King of Great Brittain France & Ireland &c and signed a proclamation for his being proclaimed as such this morning at the Accustomed places & with the usual Solemnity The Privy Council who meet on this Occasion were A B of Canterbury Earl of Stairs Lord High Chancellor Duke of Grafton Duke of Kent Earl of Cholmondeley Duke of New Castle Lord Finch Lord Carteret Sir Spencer Compton Earl of Lincoln Lord chief Iustice Raymond Lord Lechmere Lord chief Justice Eyre Lord Bathurst Sir Robert Walpole Duke of Argyle Sir Joseph Jekeyl Earl of Macclefield William Pulteney Esqr Earl of Nottingham Henry Pelham Esqr Lord Trevor Mr Attorney and Duke of Bridgwater Mr Sollicitor General
With several others of the Council together with many other Lords and Commoners who also subscribed the Proclamation
A Letter was sent to the Lord Mayor of this City to Ac quaint him with the News and to desire his Lordship to take the proper methods for preserving the peace of this City About 12 last night his Lordship sent one of his Officers to the Royal Exchange to Acquaint the people who were Assem bled in Great numbers in Expectation of seing the Solemnity p. 177 performed that his Majesty would be proclaimed this day at 12 a Clock Whereas it hath pleased Almighty God to call to his Mercy our late Sovereign Lord King George of blessed Memory by whose decease the Imperial Crowns of Great Britain France 4ud Ireland are Solely and Rightiully come to the high and mighty Prince George Prince of Wales we therefore the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of this Realm being being here As sisted with those of his late Majestys Privy Council with Numbers of other principal Gentlemen of Quality with the Lord Major Aldermen and Citizens of London do now hereby with one full Voice and Consent of Tongue and Heart pub lish and proclaim that the high and mighty Prince George Prince of Wales is now by the Death of our late Sovereign of happy memory become our only lawful and rightful Leige Lord George the second by the Grace of God King of Great Brittain France and Ireland Defender of the Faith &c to whom we do Acknowledge all Faith and Constant Obedience with all humble and hearty Affection Beseeching God by
