My paternal grandmother, Rosena (Opp) Walker, was born on 3/13/1880 in Glückstal, Russia and died 2/17/1959 in Ashley, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Daniel F. Opp and Magdalena Kline. My Opp family came to America in 1884 and lived in Harrison Township in McPherson County, South Dakota. I have traced this Opp family line back to the mid 1700's in Rockenhausen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

Our Opp's, like thousands of other Germans, left Germany in 1785 and stopped in Tscherwenka Hungary, a German refugee camp. They stayed in Hungary for 20 years before heading to  free farming land in Russia; they settled in a Russian  camp in 1807; the camp was called Glückstal.


My paternal great, great grandfather, Johann Friedrich "Fred" Opp (1815-1884) was born in Glückstal. After he died, his son Daniel F. Opp (and family) came to America (1884) with his widowed mother Regina (Eberle) Opp. Regina was born in 1819 Bergdorf, Russia and died in 1903 Long Lake, South Dakota. "Fred" and Regina had 11 children:

My paternal great grandparents were Daniel F. and Magdalena (Klein) Opp. Daniel was born 12/30/1840 in Glückstal, Russia and Magdalene Klein (daughter of Ludwig Klein and Philippina Katharina Fauth). She was born 5/6/1843 in Glückstal, Russia. Daniel and Magdalena married in Russia on 11/3/1864. Daniel died 2/19/1927 in Fredodnia, North Dakota. Magdalena died 5/6/1921 in Fredonia.

My paternal grandmother:

Rosena Opp  (daugher of Daniel F. Opp) was born on 13 Mar 1880 in Glückstal,Russia. She died on 17 Feb 1959 in Ashley,,North Dakota,USA. She was buried in Ashley, North Dakota.

Rosena married Jacob Walker  son of Jakob Walcker and Magdalene Hoffmann on 13 Nov 1897 in Eureka,South Dakota. Jacob was born on 21 Mar 1873 in Neu Freudenthal,Russia. He died on 13 Feb 1958 in Ashley, North Dakota,USA. He was buried in Ashley,,North Dakota.  Birth date comes from Walker family Bible. Land Purchase: McPherson Co., South Dakota: T127N  70W
Section 35  (160 acres) 11/14/1904 Jacob and Rosina (Opp) Walker lived in Ashley, McIntosh Co., North Dakota from 1943 until their deaths. They are buried in the Ashley City Cemetery, Ashley, N.D. Jacob was a member of the Eureka Baptist Church and in his later years he was a member of the First German Bapatist Church of Ashley.

Jakob Walcker applied to become a United States citizen on July 1, 1897 (McPherson County Clerk Book 1, pg 386.) His appications states he came to New York in May of 1885 and was born in Russia in 1873. He was declared a citizen 12/15/1903 Book 13, page 2. Jacob and his wife Rosina never learned to speak English, in spite of living in America for over 70 years, they spoke the high-German dialect of  Schwäbisch.

1.  Samuel Walker  was born on 23 Apr 1899 in Long Lake, South Dakota. He died on 17 Feb 1982 in Fargo, North Dakota. He was buried in Ashley, North Dakota.

Samuel married (1) Ida Brandner  daughter of Johann Brandner and Barbara Kraus on 16 Nov 1926 in Eureka,South Dakota.  Ida was born on 26 May 1899 in Eureka,South Dakota. She died on 3 Oct 1955. She was buried in Ashley,North Dakota. Samuel married (2) Agnes Cora Jones  on 14 May 1961. Agnes was born on 24 Dec 1916 in Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana. She died on 22 Nov 2004 in Killiher, Beltrami County, Minnesota.

2.  Martin Walker  was born on 19 Mar 1904 in Eureka,South Dakota. He died in In Infancy.

3.  Pauline Walker  was born on 24 Apr 1906 in Eureka,South Dakota,USA. She died on 3 Jul 2000 in Aberdeen,Brown County,South Dakota. She was buried in Ashley, McIntosh County,North Dakota. Pauline, affectionately known as Polly, and Albert made their first home on a farm near Eureka, South Dakota. In 1945, they moved to Ashley, where they operated the Brandner Cafe.  In 1959, they moved to Aberdeen, where they manage the Brandner Apartments. They were members of the Praise Family Bible Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota.


Pauline married Albert Brandner  son of Johann Brandner and Barbara Kraus on 3 Dec 1924 in Leola,South Dakota. Albert was born on 17 Dec 1903 in Eureka,South Dakoa. He died on 21 Jul 1961 in Aberdeen,South Dakota. He was buried in Ashley,North Dakota. Albert and Pauline Brandner farmed in Eureka, South Dakota until 1946, then the moved to Ashley, North Dakota and operated the Ashley Cafe.

4.  Adolph J. Walker  was born on 15 Aug 1909 in McPherson County, South Dakota. He died on 17 Mar 2003 in Bismarck, North Dakota. 

Adolph married Emma Anna Wolf  daughter of Heinrich "Henry" Wolf and Pauline Brandner on 1 Oct 1933 in Eureka,South Dakota. Emma was born on 9 Aug 1911 in Danzig, McIntosh Co., North Dakota. She died on 16 Nov 1997 in Bismarck,Burleigh Co.,North Dakota. Born on Roemmich farm near Danzig, McIntosh Co., North Dakota.  Had alzheimers disease.

5.  Rudolph Walker  was born on 20 Sep 1911.

6. Leah Walker  was born on 6 Mar 1913 in Fredonia,North Dakota.. She died on 10 Jun 1984 in Bismarck,North Dakota. Died of cancer of the stomach. Leah married Edmund Bentz  son of Johann "John" Bentz and Christina Brandner on 14 Nov 1935 in Eureka,South Dakota. Edmund was born on 23 Nov 1910 in Eureka,South Dakota. He died on 3 Dec 1994 in Ashley, North Dakota.

7.  Welentina "Tina" Walker  was born on 11 May 1915 in Fredonia,North Dakota. She died on 5 Sep 1999 in Ashley,North Dakota. Welentina married (1) Edward Brandner  son of Johann Brandner and Barbara Kraus on 7 Oct 1934 in Ashley,North Dakota. Edward was born on 24 Dec 1893 in Martel, McPherson Co.,South Dakota. He died on 14 Aug 1942 in McPHERSON County, South Dakota. He was buried in Ashley,City Cemetery,Ashley,North Dakota. 


Edward Brandner married Welentina Walker on October 8, 1934 at the Evangelical Church in Eureka, South Dakota; he was 39 years old and she was 19. Edward took his own life in 1942.

Welentina married (2) Wilhelm "Willie" Eszlinger  son of Saloman Eszlinger and Karolina Salzer on 28 Jan 1952 in Ashley, McINTOSH County, North Dakota. Wilhelm was born on 4 Apr 1909 in North Dakota. He died on 10 May 1995 in Ashley, McIntosh County, North Dakota.


8.   Edwin Walker  was born on 27 Sep 1916 in Fredonia,North Dakota. He died on 29 Nov 2006 in Eureka, South Dakota. Edwin was born in Fredonia, Logan Co., North Dakota on 9/27/1916; one month later the family moved to a farm east of Eureka, McPherson Co., South Dakota.  He married  Elsie Wagenmann on 11/13/1938 in rural Leola, South Dakota. The family farmed there until 1959, when them moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota.  Elsie Emelia Wagenmann  daughter of Rudolph Peter Wagenmann and Christina Kranzler on 13 Nov 1938. Elsie was born on 15 Dec 1918 in (Near) Highland, McPherson County, South Dakota. She died on 11 Nov 2013 in Eureka, South Dakota.


9.  Oliver Elmer Walker  was born on 28 Apr 1920 in Eureka,South Dakota. He died on 23 Mar 2007 in Long Beach, California. He was buried on 29 Mar 2007 in Westminster Cemetery, Long Beach, California. Born in Eureka, South Dakota, he grew up in Long Lake, South Dakota. My father left farming life when he was drafted in World War II. He was
stationed in England in 1942 at Bassingborn, near Cambridge. While there, he met my mother. They were married on January 2, 1947 in Cambridge and left England (for New York) on 1/16/1947 aboard American Overseas Airlines.  From New York, they went directly to Ashley, McIntosh Co., North Dakota.

"Ollie" and  "Kathy"   (daughter of Thomas William Furness and Kate Maud Tinsworth) married on 2 Jan 1947 in Cambridge, England; she was born on 22 Oct 1924 in Cambridge.  She died on 11 Aug 1992 in Anchorage,Alaska and was buried in Palmer, Alaska. (see Walker family history)


10.  Clarence Walker  was born on 14 Oct 1922 in Eureka,South Dakota. He died in 1933 in Eureka,South Dakota. He was buried in Long Lake,Baptist Cemetery, McPherson Co.,South Dakota.  Died of pneumonia.

11.  Iver Leroy Walker  was born on 18 Mar 1928 in Eureka,South Dakota. He died on 22 Apr 2014 in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Iver married Donna Marie Jung  daughter of Edwin J. Jung and Gertrude on 30 Jan 1951. Donna was born on 25 Feb 1928 in Madison,South Dakota.
