JOHANN PAUL "John" MIELKE was born in Oberkochen, Germany in 1854 and was the son of Karl and Marianne (nee Rymon) Mielke. Records (1892) show he was a peasant farmer living in Flötenstein which was about 10 miles from Oberchotzen.

Johann married a widow with 2 daughters in 1885. Her name was Susana (nee Roggenbuck). She was daughter of Franz and Elizabeth (nee Leo) Roggenbuck. Susana was born in 1847 in Flötenstein.

Johann and Susana immigrated to America aboard the SS AMERICA, leaving Hamburg Germany and landing in Baltimore on 2/25/1892 with only $5 to their name. The family settled in Bellingham, Minnesota and John found work as a railroad section laborer. In 1908, they moved to Nassau, Minnesota where John had a truck garden and Susana was a mid-wife. They were of the Catholic faith.

Susana died unexpectedly in 1915; her obituary read: "Dropped dead while fixing dinner, she had not been previously ill".

By the late 1920's, John Paul Mielke was living in Hardin, Montana near his son Frank Mielke.
John's granddaughter, "Dolly" (Mielke) Marsh told me that her Grandfather John Mielke was a very frugal man. She chuckled as she told me a story about him finding a large metal bowl (with a hole in it) at the local landfill. He "repaired" the bowl by plugging the hole with a metal bolt and proudly presented it to Dolly as a gift.  She also told me that he played the accordion and church piano. His accordion (which he brought from Germany) is now in the Hardin, Montana Museum.
