My mother Kathleen "Kathy"
Furness, was born in Cambridge, England in 1924. Her parents were Thomas
William Furness and Kate Tinsworth. I have traced the Furness family line
back to 1700 in Cold Higham, Northamptonshire and my Tinsworth line back
to 1560 in Heydon, Norfolk, England.
Thomas William Furniss (Coleen's maternalgreat grandfather) was born
on 22 May 1859 in Cold Higham,Northamptonshire,England. He died on 20
Jun 1907 in Cambridge,Cambridgeshire,England. He was a member of Northampton
Regiment at the age of 18 Northampton 28th Brigade, 48th Regiment, he
was a musician in the military.

the spelling of Furness. 1st husband Frederick Brown 1909 Cambridge,

Mary married Arthur R. Offley in 1910 in Cambridge, England.
3. Thomas William Furness was born in 1889 and died
on 11 Jan 1957. My maternal grandfather.

Thomas William Furness, my maternal
grandfather, was born on 19 Jan 1889 in Romford,Hornchurch,Essex,England.
He was an accomplished violin player and worked in a brick making factory
until one of the machines cut off part of his arm. After he lost his arm,
he could no longer play the violin, so instead he played a hurdy-gurdy
on the street corners for money.

My Father
My parents 1st first child, a boy, named David Oliver, was born on 12/24/1947
in Ashley, North Dakota. The baby died two days later. My dad built
the babies casket and dug the grave himself. Kathleen hated Ashley,
North Dakota. Forty years later, she still talked about feeling like an
outsider because the entire town spoke only German, so she went back to
England. Six months later, mom told my dad that she would come back to America
only if he moved away from Ashley, she said there were too many bad memories
there...he agreed.
By the time mom came back to the United States, dad had moved to Wahpeton,
North Dakota to enroll in a school to learn auto-body repair. A year
later, in March of 1950, they moved to Alaska. Two months after
moving to Alaska, their daughter Coleen Marie was born 5/10/1950 in Anchorage.
Mom became an American citizen in 1955.
My parents homesteaded near Fire Lake in 1950. Mom worked as a social
worker at the Office of Equal Opportunity, for the Head Start program
in Eagle River in the late 1960s, for UAA's Cooperative Extension and for
the state of Alaska's welfare assistance program. She enjoyed crossword
puzzles, knitting Alaska sweaters and making Alaska clay ceramics.
Sylvia Florence "Midge" Furness (my maternal
aunt) was born on 21 Sep 1926 in Cambridge,England. She died on
21 Apr 2006 in Cambridge.
Sylvia married Thomas "Mick" Nunn on 14 Nov 1947 in Cambridge,England.
Thomas was born on 4 Dec 1921 in Cambridge, England.
Roy Furness (my maternal uncle) was born
on 11 Aug 1935 in Cambridge,England. He died on 5 Dec 2001 in Cambridge,England.
