Finding Your Way to Maps: An Introduction to Denver Public Library's Cartographic Collections

J. Wendel Cox

One either loves maps or has no interest in them. If you're still reading this, you likely love them, and you'll want to know more about the maps collections housed in the Western History and Genealogy Department at Denver Public Library, and how they might apply to your research.

J. Wendel Cox is Senior Special Collection Librarian in the Western History and Genealogy Department. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he found his way to Denver without a map. He spends weekends with his wife, Anna Dronzek, a lawyer, in Albuquerque, where she clerks for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. Wendel and Anna have one cat, Little Girl, aged 20 years.

Sounds of History

Richard J. Schroeder

Sounds of History will be a program with no visuals, just Theater of the Mind. Richard Schroeder has written a script around the brief sound bites he has collected starting with his earliest recorded sounds from about 1860, through Thomas Edison's invention of the phonograph and through the World Wars and other major events of the 20th century. Mr. Schroeder's program should bring back memories from younger days and put actual sounds to important people's voices from history.

Mr. Schroeder moved to Jefferson County in 1969 where he and his wife raised their family. He spent 30 years in radio broadcasting where he developed a hobby of collecting tape recordings of voices and sounds from history that he encountered in his work. He then spent 12 years as a computer systems (IT) administrator. Now that he is retired he has returned to his hobby and collects more sounds in digital form through the Internet.
