Welcome to the Clover Family Research Site.

DAR SAR News

I periodically get queries about joining the DAR or SAR.   To become a member, you must show that your ancestor aided the cause of the American Revolution.  This could be by serving in the Army or in the militia or by selling wheat to the Continental Army, for example.  Just recently it was discovered that the statutes in MD and VA that enacted the 1783 tax stated that the tax would help pay for supplies that the State was required to furnish. In Pennsylvania, everyone on the supply tax lists, which are published in the PA Archives and free at Fold3, is eligible.  This means that many more people will be eligible to join.  Nearly all of the 1783 Virginia tax lists survived and are available on microfilm from the LDS library.

Clover DNA Project News

New Article on DNA and genealogy with comments on Autosomal DNA
This is a new subject.  If any Clovers have done this, please contact me. If you have not, please think about it.  It is useful for both males and females.
We started a Clover DNA project several years ago.  There were about seven lines of Clovers residing in America before 1800. Several more came from Germany and England in the 1800s. We hope to find out if some of these lines are related.  We also suspect that there may have been some name changes by the immigrants.  We hope that we may find matches in similar spelled names.  We expect to use Genetic Research along with Traditional Genealogy Research to try to find out more about our ancestors.

Since the Y Chromosome is carried by the male of the line, we need some Clover males to take the test.  We hope that our many female readers will help us out by talking to their brothers, cousins, etc.  If a male is willing to take the test, but cannot afford it, please contact me.  If you are willing to donate money, but can't take the test, let me know.

New        I recently published a copy of an 1820 New Jersey Court Case for Lewis Peter Clover.  Peter Clover, eldest son of John Peter Clover, gave a long deposition for this case.  It strongly suggests that there is a kinship between them.  Descendants of John Peter Clover have had their DNA tested. But no one from the family of Lewis Peter Clover of New York City has been tested.  If this is your family, contact me and we will try to track down a donor.  The court case does not prove a connection, it just suggests one.  I am having trouble figuring it out.

I also need a descendant of the Johan Nicolas Clover/Claver family to be tested.  There has been some thought of a connection, but so far it is just a thought. We need proof.

Another New Jersey family is the one which moved to Fairfield County, Ohio.  I suspect that there is no living Clover male in this line to be tested.  If you know of one, let me know.

Check out the DNA site at: www.familytreedna.com Put Clover in the search box. We have chosen this site for the project because it was the first and is the largest program of its type.  Your DNA information will not be shared with anyone without your permission.  This site has strict privacy rules.

Clover Books for Sale

The information on this site is free for all to see at no charge. However, some people have asked me to make paper copies available.  They find paper easier to read and understand. See this site for the Clover Books which are available at this time. Some are now out of print.

Update Report

I update this site all the time.  If you would like to receive a monthly report on what pages I have added, please contact me at [email protected]  The frequency of the report sometimes depends on how much I find time to do.

Using the Search Engine

Try several spellings. Do not be too specific.  Note that there may be 10 ways to spell Sharpenstine and the search engine will not look for parts of words. So check the pages on the state you are interested in.  There may be something you need to see there. Note that there may be entries which refer to a person in which the name is misspelled.  I have copied as well as I could exactly what I have found.  I have not changed spellings of names because I think that is a dangerous practice. Consequently, I strongly suggest you check the actual state and or family pages in addition to using the index. The index will help you locate a record for a person who is not where you would have expected to find him or her. Also look at the site map to see the pages that might interest you.

Remember that your person may appear with a misspelled name or an initial.  Do not ask only for "Philip Clover" because he may be there as P or as Philip or as Phillip or with a middle initial or as Clover, Philip.  There are so many Clovers here, you should try first for an unusual place or wife's name.

You may also want to do a search by the name of a county.  Put in "Scott County", for example, and you will get back a manageable number of hits and eventually discover the roots of the Clovers in Scott County, Arkansas.

If you can't find your people, send me an email. There are about 425 pages here all of which have Clover on the page so don't bother doing a Clover search.

The site is re-indexed regularly so if you don't see something today, check back. There could be information here that has not yet been indexed.

Advanced Search Engine: Click on Site Map below and at the bottom of the page you will see an advanced search engine which will do Boolean Searches, etc. This may help if you are looking for a common name.  Every word on the site is indexed. If you have trouble, contact me.
