Guangxi

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was founded in 1958. There are other minorities living here including Miao, Yao and Dong. Guangxi's capital city, Nanning (Southern Peace), was founded in 214 B.C. The Guangxi Museum displays botanical and zoological specimens, historical relics, and Taiping history. It also boasts the largest collection of bronze drums (over 300) in China. South Lake Park has 1200 varieties of medicinal herbs, orchids and bonsai. Yiling Cave, is much like a Guilin cave, with colored lights to highlight weird rock formations that look like lions, hens, and vegetables. Visit a minority village or the Institute of Nationalities and you will see art, music, and dances from various nationalities. Jintian Village is where the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom originated. It was the most extensive peasant uprising in Chinese history.

Liuzhou, west of Guangdong province, was founded in 111 B.C. The Liu Marquis Temple and Tomb was built in honor of Liu Zongyuan, a famous Tang writer and for four years provincial governor. In the Bai Lain Cave, Liujiang Man lived 20,000-30,000 years ago.

Guilin (City of Cassia Trees), is in northern Guangxi. Its scenery inspired centuries of landscape painters. Famous for its vertical limestone mountains rising above tree-lined streets, rice fields and the meandering Li and Taohua (Peach Blossom) rivers, Guilin is also known for its caves.
