     James Cheyne was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 24 July 1823, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 440: [This entry was placed in the register considerably after the fact and with six other entries of the same family.] "1823 July 24th Thomas Cheyne (986), Seaman in Peterhead had a son baptized, named James (995), before Alexander Simpson and John Jack.”.1

James Cheyne were listed as children in the household of an unknown person on the 1841 Scotland Census, at Union Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Also present were his father, Thomas (986), and brothers, Thomas (993) and William (994) Cheynes. They were all listed as seamen on an enumeration district of only seamen.2

James Cheyne married Ann Mearns 20 August 1846, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Peterhead, 1820-1854, Page 162/415, "August 20th (1846) James Cheyne (995), Seaman and Ann Mearns (1008), both in this parish.”.3

The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 329, "April 10th (1850) James Cheyne (995), Seaman in Peterhead and Ann Mearns (1008) his wife had a son born 28th March, baptized and named James (1009), before Robert Warrender and Alexander Webster.”.4

The baptismal record of Ann Cheyne documented James Cheyne, seaman, in Peterhead, as her father, 22 March 1852, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 371, "March 22nd (1852) James Cheyne (995), Seaman, in Peterhead, and Ann Mearns (1008), his wife, had a daughter, born 4th baptized and named Ann (1010), before Thomas Cheyne (986) and Alexander Webster.”.5

James Cheyne witnessed the christening of his nephew, James Wilson, on 20 October 1852, at Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 383, "October 20th (1852) James Wilson (3377), Seaman, in Peterhead and Elizabeth Cheyne (996) his wife, had a son born 4th, baptized and named James (3380), before Alexander Wilson and James Cheyne (995)"..6

The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 394, "June 1st (1853) James Cheyne (995), Seaman, in Peterhead, and Ann Mearns (1008) his wife had a son born 17th May - baptized and named William (1011), before James Wilson (3377) and Alexander Webster.”.7

James Cheyne witnessed the christening of his nephew, Robert Wilson, on 27 September 1854, at Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 421, "September 27th (1854) James Wilson (3377), Seaman, in Peterhead and Elizabeth Cheyne (996) his wife, had a son born 16th baptized and named Robert (3381) before James Cheyne (995) and Alexander Wilson"..8

James Cheyne, 32, mariner, born in Peterhead, married Ann Mearns 1846 who in Peterhead and father of the child, recorded the birth of John Cheyne, on 24 July 1855, in James Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 8 AM.9

James Cheyne, residing at 29 James Street, Peterhead, obtained his second mate's certificate on 27 November 1856 at the port of Aberdeen, for which he applied 20 November, in Peterhead. He was declared competent on the 24th. His service record included serving as appentice aboard the Resolution for four years: seaman aboard Enterprise, Hamilton Ross, Rapid, Mazlinthen and Intrepid; mate, Lantana, Xanthias and Liberal, all out of Peterhead. Total time at sea 13 years, 11 months and 26 days. He late obtained his Only Mate Certificate, 12 December 1856, after being declared competent on the eighth of the same month.10

James Cheyne was listed as a seaman on the birth records of his twin son and daughter James and Ann, on 26 April 1858, in 4 James Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 5:25 AM.11

James Cheyne, seaman, recorded the birth of his daughter, Elizabeth McWilliam Cheyne, on 13 September 1859, in 4 James Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 12:35 AM.12

James Cheyne, seaman, was listed on the death record as the father of the deceased James Cheyne, on 28 October 1859; at 5 AM, of marasmus for several months.13

James Cheyne, seaman, was listed on the death record as the father of the deceased Elizabeth McWilliam Cheyne, on 8 December 1859; at 9:45 AM, of bronchitis for two days.14

James Cheyne, shipmaster, recorded the death of his wife, Ann Cheyne, on 12 February 1860, at James Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 3:45 AM.15

James was probably a witness at the marriage of , his cousin, James Beaton Cheyne and Eleanor Watson, on 11 December 1860 at 11 Kirkton Street, at Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; Free Church of Scotland.16

James Cheyne and Robert Smith Cheyne were listed on the 1861 England Census at Saint Andrew Quay, in Kent, England. James was listed as Mate and Robert a seaman, they were aboard the Vivid. All aboard were born in Peterhead, Aberdeen, except William Gibson, who was born in Fyvie, Aberdeen. The others were: George Hutcheson, Master; Alex'r Leisk, cook and seaman; William Gibson, seaman; and John Mathew, seaman. 'Jeams' was also listed as a widower, age 37; and Robert, unmarried, age 23.17

James Cheyne married Margaret Robertson 26 January 1863, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, at Gask, in Cruden Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The marriage record states that he was a seaman in the Merchant Service, residing at 5 James Street, Peterhead, before the marriage; and that he was a widower.18,19

James was a witness at the marriage of Francis Will and, his cousin, Margaret Cheyne, on 26 May 1863 at Invernettie, at Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; Established Church of Scotland.20

James was probably a witness at the marriage of William Mutch and, his cousin, Christian Cheyne, on 1 November 1863 at 5 James Street, at Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; Church of Scotland.21

In a letter, dated in 1864, James Cheyne (995), refers to his brother, Robert (1000), as living in Calcutta.18

An article in the Southland Times dated 18 November 1879 described the trial of a James Cheyne accused of horse theft. That James probably was either James (995) or (20964) Cheyne.22

James Cheyne died 19 May 1907 in Waverly, New Zealand.18,23
