     William Cheyne was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 4 May 1821, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 439: [This entry was placed in the register considerably after the fact and with one other entry of the same family.] "1821 May 4 Thomas Cheyne (986), Seaman in Peterhead, had a son baptized, named William (994) before Alexander Simpson and John Booth”. [N.B.--Conflicted evidence, his Ship's Master Application had his date of birth as 5 May 1822 in Peterhead.]1,2

William Cheyne was listed on the 1841 Scotland Census at Union Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Also present were his father, Thomas (986), and brothers, Thomas (993) and James (995) Cheynes. They were all listed as seamen on an enumeration district of only seamen.3

William Cheyne married Margaret Cobban Finnie 22 September 1842, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Peterhead, 1820-1854, Page 130/383, "22nd Sept'r (1842) William Cheyne (994), Seaman and Margaret Finnie (1016) both in Peterhead.”.4

The baptismal record of Margaret Cheyne documented William Cheyne as her father, 8 March 1844, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 230, "March 8th (1844) William Cheyne (994), Seaman, in Peterhead and Margaret Finnie (1016), his wife, had a daughter born 5th baptized & named Margaret (1017), before John Lowrie and Mrs. Cheyne (992).”.5

William's wife, Margaret, was found on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses in Peterhead listed as seaman's wife. He was not present, probably at sea.

William Cheyne obtained his master's certificate #10856 on 23 September 1854 at the port of Peterhead for which he applied 14 September. He was declared competent on the 18th. He had previously obtained his Mate's certificate, 15 August of the same year, also at Peterhead. His service record included serving as appentice aboard the Mary out of Peterhead for four years: seaman aboard Mary, Superior, Enterprise and Victor, all Peterhead and Sir William Wallace, Banff; mate Bruties, Fraserburgh, Empress, Banff and Victor and Gem, Peterhead. Total time at sea 16 years, 4 months and 3 weeks.6

William Cheyne, shipmaster, recorded the death of his daughter, Margaret Cheyne, on 8 October 1856, at 1 Union Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 2:30 PM, of scrofulous tumour on brain for four months.7,8

William Cheyne and his wife Margaret C. Cheyne were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 7 Bath Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a master mariner, age 59. In addition to this entry; under a section of the 1881 census headed; "at sea or in a domestic or foreign port", a William Cheyne, 59, born in Peterhead, was noted as "Mate" aboard the Forward.9,10,11

William Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 7 Bath Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a retired ship master. William was 69 years of age and born in Peterhead Parish.12

William Cheyne died 22 January 1896.7

William Cheyne was buried, at Peterhead Old Cemetery, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following MI was transcribed by Alison Anderson: Erected by William Cheyne Shipmaster in Peterhead in memory of his daughter Margaret, who departed this life 8th October, 1856 in the 13th year of her age. A flower when offer'd in the bud is no vain sacrifice. Also his wife Margaret Cobban Finnie who died 24th October, 1893, aged 70 years. Much regretted. Also the above William Cheyne who died 22nd January, 1896, aged 74 years..7
