James Cheyne and his wife Jane Cheyne were listed on the 1871 Scotland Census, at School Lane, in Blantye, Blantyre Parish, Lanark, Scotland. He was head of household and a coal miner. Also present were his children, Mary Cheyne, Devina Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne and Elizabeth Cheyne.3

He died before the 1881 census, where his wife was listed as a coal miner's widow.4
