     Hugh Cheyne was born, 17 June 1823, in Clyde Street, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.1,2

Hugh Cheyne was baptized, 27 June 1823, in Barony Parish, Lanark, Scotland.3

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 24 September 1838, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Elisha Dennison, out of Liverpool. He was 15 and a clerk. He was a citizen of Scotland and intended to become an inhabitant of the United States.2

Hugh Cheyne married Margaret Innes 5 February 1847, at Renton Park, in Glasgow, Gorbals Parish, Lanark, Scotland. The couple was also married in Cardross Parish, Dunbarton, 23 January 1847.4

Hugh Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 19 July 1849, at New York, New York, USA. Also present was their daughter Isabella Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Cora Lynn, out of Glasgow. Hugh was listed as Mr. Hugh Cheyne, 26 and a merchant; Marg't was 22; and, Isabella, 1-1/2. They were citizens of Scotland and intended to become an inhabitants of the United States.5

Hugh Cheyne listed on the 1850 United States Census, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. He was head of household and a clerk. Also in the household were Margaret Cheyne, Isabella Cheyne, Mary Cheyne and Johannah Cheyne. Hugh and Margaret must have immigrated to the US soon after they were married. Johannah Cheyne was 22 years of age and was born in Ireland. Her relationship is yet to be determined.6

Hugh Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 2 April 1858, at New York, New York, USA. Also present were their children Isabella Cheyne, Mary Cheyne, Thomas Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Glasgow, out of Glasgow. Hugh was listed as Mr. Hugh Cheyne, 34 and a merchant; Margaret was 30; Isabella, 10; Mary, 8; Thomas, 4; and, Margaret, 1. They were citizens of Great Britain and intended to become an inhabitants of the United States.7

Hugh Chiene was listed on the 1860 United States Census, at Ward 22, District 1, in New York, New York, USA. He was head of household and a bookkeeper. Also in the household were Margrit Chiene, Iebella Chiene, Mary Chiene, Margrit Chiene, Thomas Chiene and Samuel Chiene. Hugh was listed as 36 years of age and born in Scotland.8

He was found on six tax assessment lists for District 9, New York, in 1862, 1864, 1865 and 1866. In all cases he resided at 107 West 41st or no address was cited. He was assessed amounts varying from $4.50 to $123.65.9

Hugh Cheyne listed on the 1870 United States Census, at Ward 20, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. He was head of household and a Under the heading of occupation the entry said "Cast Sewing Machine Man'f. Co.". Also in the household were Margaret Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, Thomas Cheyne, Samuel Cheyne, Hugh Cheyne, Lizzie Cheyne, Ellen Cheyne, Walter Cheyne and Isabella Cheyne. He appears to being renting, as no real estate value was listed. His personal possionions were listed as $1000. He was a US citizen.10

Hugh Cheyne was listed on the 1880 United States Census, in Acquackanonck, Passaic, New Jersey, USA. He was head of household and a book keeper. Also present were his children, Mary Cheyne, Hugh Cheyne, Nellie Cheyne and Walter Cheyne.11

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 24 September 1884, at New York, New York, USA. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Circassia, out of Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland. They were all citizens of the United States, were Cabin Class passengers and carried 5 pieces of luggage between them. Their ages were legible.12

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 30 August 1887, at New York, New York, USA. Also present was their son Walter Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Devonia, out of Glasgow. Hugh was 64 and a merchant and Walter was 19 and a clerk. They were citizens of the United States, First Cabin passengers and carried seven pieces of luggage.13

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list on 22 September 1891 at New York, New York, USA. Also present was his daughter Nellie Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Circassia, out of Glasgow, Scotland and Londonderry, Ireland. He was 68 and a merchant; she was 25. They were citizens of the United States, First Cabin passengers, carried 7 pieces of luggage and boarded in Glasgow.14

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 14 August 1894, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the State of Nebraska, out of Glasgow. He was 72 and no occupation. He was a citizen of the United States, a Cabin passenger, carried 3 pieces of luggage and boarded in Glasgow.15

Hugh Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 19 August 1896, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Majestic, out of Liverpool. He was 73 and his occupation was not legiable. He was a citizen of the United States, a First Cabin passenger and carried 1 piece of luggage.16

Hugh Cheyne died 20 February 1899 in Kings, New York, USA.17
