John Cheyne

M, #8528, b. circa 1650
FatherUnlinked Cheynes in Fife
John Cheyne was born, circa 1650.

According to Eminent Men of Fife, the Chienes of Crail were shipowners and sea captains, of which there were several brothers and were descended from the family of the Viscount of Newhaven. If that was correct, this John probably was the progenitor and the link between the families. Two of his grandchildren were prominently featured in biographies and a third had some mention.1

John Cheyne married Eupham Hamiltone 27 July 1677, in Crail Parish, Fife, Scotland. This John Cheyne probably married Eupham Hamiltone (also Hamiltoun) in Crail, Fife, 1677. They had one son, William.2

John Cheyne married Elspet Adamson 29 November 1688, in Crail Parish, Fife, Scotland. This John Cheyne probably married Elspet Adamson in Crail, 1688. The second marriage takes place one year after the birth of Eupham's only child (according to the IGI). It is herein assumed that John married a second time, probably after the death of Eupham. Also note that a second son was named William. Perhaps the first William died young. Two different dates are given on the IGI for the marriage to Elspet Adamson. 17 November 1688 (Batch M114172, Serial 0703) and 29 November same year (Batch M114175, Serial 0979). The 17th was probably the Banns and the 29th the marriage.3
