James Cheyne

M, #826, b. circa 1640
FatherGeorge or Robert Cheyne b. c 1620
MotherBarbara (?) b. c 1600
He was mentioned in W. D. Cheyne-MacPherson, The Cheyne Family of Inverugie, on page 35.1

This James was a powerful figure in Methlick. He was listed in the 1696 Poll, as a Tenant for lands in Methlick and Monquhitter. He witnessed baptisms of Sir George Gordon of Haddo and Sir George witnessed for him.
His wife apparently died in child birth, 6 June 1692. A later child William was born, "begotten in fornication", 2 April 1694. It is not known if that William was the son of James elder or younger. James younger would have only been 16 at that time. Because this birth was recorded at Auchencreibe, it would have had to be one on this two James'. I have placed him to the elder James. I have also credited all later children to the younger James.
I can not find a continuation for the last four male children:
Robert: may be the Robert fathering children in Belhelvie, 1726-1747.
Patrick: No births to a Patrick or Peter between 1708-1761.
Charles: No births to a Charles before 1844.
William: Possible children are William, born 1719, Forglen; or Anna, born 1740, Belhelvie. It is unusual that in Belhelvie the Robert and William both had daughters named Anna, and they had a sister Anna.

He graduated from Aberdeen University in 1662 and later received a Masters of Arts degree from King's College, 19 July 1666. The entry in Fasti Aberdonenses reads "Anno 1662. In album collegii Aberdonensis juvene '(quorum nomina sequuntur)' sub regimine magistri Andree Massei sunt recepti...Jacobus Cheyne, Aberdonensis...". The entry in Officers and Graduates of University & King's College and in Fasti Aberdonenses reads: "Anno 1666. Lauream magisterialem consequnti sunt '(promotore Andrea Massaeo)' juvenes quorum nomina subsequuntur... Julii 19... Mr. Jacobus Chein, Abredonensis...".2,3
