     Madge Hunter was born, 21 May 1880, in Moundsville, Marshall, West Virginia, USA. Her date of birth was stated to have been 20 May 1880 on a copy of her birth certificate obtained in 1977 and the image downloaded from the West Virginia Vital Records WebSite, which had her name as Maggie; 21 May 1880 on her death certificate and 22 May in my mother's book of dates.1,2,3,4,5,6

William Gamble Hunter, Mary Hunter, Retta Hunter, Elizabeth A. Hunter, Lucy Hunter and Madge Hunter were listed as children in the household of Jas. J. Hunter and his wife, Adda Hunter on the 1880 United States Census, in Moundsville, Marshall, West Virginia, USA. Madge was just born in May and had not yet been named.7

Madge Hunter married John Tubman 30 August 1897, in Portland, Jay, Indiana, USA. She was 18 and resided in Dunkirk.8

The attached photo of Madge, also called Maggie, was taken about 1898.9

Madge Tubman and her husband, John Tubman, were listed on the 1900 United States Census, at 548 East Main Street, in Lancaster, Fairfield, Ohio, USA. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their child was, Zela Elizabeth Tubman. They had been married for three years and she had only one child.. Madge was 20 years old and born in West Virginia.10

John Tubman (Madge), foreman, B & G Glass Company, resides at 202 South Linden, Sapulpa, Creek, Oklahoma, USA, in 1918. (Sapulpa City Directory 1918, page 194).11

Madge Tubman and her husband, John Tubman, were listed on the 1920 United States Census, at 202 South Linden, in Sapulpa, Creek, Oklahoma, USA. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their child was, Catherine Louise Tubman. Living at the same address was their daughter, Zela Porter (332) and her husband and daughter.. She was 39 years of age and born in West Virginia.12

John Tubman (Madge), machicist, Liberty Glass Company, resides at 202 South Linden, Sapulpa, Creek, Oklahoma, USA, in 1922. (Sapulpa City Directory 1922, page 231).11

When Lucy needed to find a new place to live, she would leave the children with her sister, Madge, because the landlords would not rent to someone with five children. Once when looking, she left her furniture with Madge. Upon her return, the furniture was sold.13

The following story is from my uncle Bill Morgan (340) about his uncle, John Tubman (331): John was a glass worker. He and his wife, Madge Hunter (82), moved from one glass factory to another. They when from Clarksburg, to Indiana, to Poteau, Oklahoma. He was laid off in Poteau and could not find other work. Bill Morgan, traveled to Oklahoma to help them. They were living in desperate conditions when he arrived. He brought them back to Clarksburg.

The following story is from Margaret Elizabeth Porter (334): She remembered when Bill Morgan and Gertrude and also the children came to pick them up. they came in a touring car and was quite crowded! Madge and Catty had gone on ahead to live with Lou Eaton (84) at her boarding house in Clarksburg, but John Tubman, his daughter Zela, and her children Margaret and "Bud" stayed because Zela had a secretarial job in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they lived. When she got laid off from that job is when and why Bill Morgan and family went to get them and bring them back to Clarksburg.

Madge Hunter was in the household of Lou Eaton and listed as sister on the 1930 United States Census, at 614 West Pike Street, in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA.2

Madge Tubman recorded the death of her husband, John Tubman, on 19 January 1935, at 460 Washington Avenue, Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA; at 8:00 PM of chronic myocarditis with a gradual circulation failure and exhaustion.4,14

Madge Tubman died 25 July 1938 at 460 Washington Avenue in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA. She died at her home, a widow and housewife. Her parents were confirmed to be as recorded herein. The death was recorded by her daughter Catty. An undated obituary from an unknown newspaper reads: "Mrs Madge Tubman, 58, widow of the late John Tubman, 460 Washington avenue died of complications early tis morning at a local hospital. She had been admitted Saturday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Mrs. Tubman was born in Moundsville and was a member of the Christian church there. She is survive by two daughters, both at home, Mrs. Zela Thomasson and Miss Catherine Tubman; and two sisters Mrs. Lou Eaton, of 614 Pike street and Mrs. Grubbs, of East Liverpool Ohio".1,15,16

Madge Tubman was buried 27 July 1938, at Elk View Cemetery, in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA..4,16
