Elizabeth died either at sea or in port at Port Chalmers, 29 January 1862, aboard the Industry. Her obituary in the Otago Witness reads "DEATH. On the 29th January, on board the "Industry" at Port Chalmers, Elizabeth Cheyne, wife of Mr. William Farnie, age 28 years".4
